“Close, cozy, comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

I liked the Hillwinds as soon as we arrived very late and found a note as to where to find the room key, information on breakfast, an emergency number and request that we check in in the morning...
...the staff was very friendly...breakfast very reminiscent of a typical "chain" continental breakfast...plenty of parking...the room was comfortable, well-equipped and clean....the Hillwinds location of only three easy walking blocks from downtown Blowing Rock was great.
....we would definitely recommend to anyone for a low-key, comfortable stay in the area.

Room Tip: The lodges and suites are roomy and nice, while the "regular" rooms area little smaller.

“No problems---good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

I read the other reviews on this place, but our experience was not consistent with some of the other reviewers.

We arrived kind of late in a pretty big rainstorm. The room was clean and appeared to be well maintained. Bed was comfortable. Wi-fi access was available.

The breakfast was supposed to last until around 10 am, and we were the last to arrive. They had put things away, so we left with 2 apples and called it good.

Overall I thought it seemed like a decent place and would consider staying here again.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

Hotel staff of the property was very helpful but there were some negatives that made my stay disappointing. When I checked in my room had no clock and the first morning there was a broken and flooding toilet. The buffet breakfast was not worthy of a B&B. It consisted of pre-packaged or pre-frozen items. Only fresh item was a bowl of apples. Even some yogurts would have improved the offerings. The biggest negative, though, were the extremely noisy water pipes. Any time someone in another room turned on a faucet of flushed a toilet it sounded like the pipes would break and flood my room. Even keeping the bathroom door didn't reduce the noise. Sleep wasn't possible. The hotel has a great location but they need to do some work on the property and improve breakfast to justify the cost.

“Cute place to stay, close to town.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

This was a cute and comfortable stop for us on a motorcycle trip through the area. It was nice to park right outside our room and have a couple of rocking chairs to relax on in the evening. The room was a little dark, but nicely decorated and offered a comfortable bed.

It a nice stroll into town, which offered many nice restaurants. We were pretty exhausted from our long day so we opted to pick up a bottle of wine at the convenient store (which had a nice wine and cigar selection) and a pizza from the Mellow Mushroom... which was well worth the wait, Yum! We walked back to the hotel and dined at the little outdoor gazebo area.

The price was right, and we'd stay here again if in the area.

“Somewhat Disappointed!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Rooms were small and cramped. Housecleaning was not sufficient, housecleaning staff obviously just did a light brush over, if that. Furniture seemed very dusty and dingy, as were the half hung curtains. The bathroom is TINY! Can not even get out of the shower without hitting the toilet. That in & of itself defeats the purpose of being clean considering the toilet is so close and so easy to brush up against. There is no vanity to speak of. The room was just not very comfortable or appealing. I would not stay there again! MUCH too pricey for what you get!!!!

Room Tip: I would avoid this property and choose another facility altogether.
