Pros: Great location (just on the outskirts of Blowing Rock; conveniently located near Blowing Rock, Boone and many amenities. Semi-gated area so very private. Very scenic area and quaint. Breakfast itself was generally good...not great.
Cons: This was the dirtiest place we've ever stayed. The carpet looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in 2 months, and there was dirt and dust everywhere. There was dried blood on our pillow cases, sheets, blanket and the towels in our bathroom. She had 3 cats that had the run of the house and there was cat hair everywhere. One cat had pooped in our shower, which of course, we had to clean out before we could use it. The cat's litter box was in the room right next to the dining table thus the view was less than pleasant as was the odor.
The house itself was a mess. Besides the dirt there was stuff crammed everywhere to the point you felt you couldn't move.
On the porch outside our room was a used bath towel from a previous guest. Our room (the Studio room) had no locks on the door (inside or out) nor a lock on the bathroom door (which was not part of our room and was right beside the kitchen. The bathroom was only separated by the kitchen by a detached, folding screen that was annoying to move every time we went in and out and which also provided no privacy for us going back and forth to the bathroom.
At night, the first night we were there, she sat in the kitchen with friends. The noise, while not overly loud, but was loud enough to keep us from going to sleep early. Additionally in the morning she would be in the kitchen making noise and making it such that sleeping late was impossible.
When we arrived we had to wait about 1 hour before she arrived home to register us and she offered no apology despite the fact she had known around the time we'd arrive.
Breakfast, while good, was another ordeal. We found out the second day that she never changed our napkins from the first day, i.e. she didn't wash them and reused them. We only found out when she made an off-handed comment about sitting in our same seats. Seconds, or extra portions, were never offered, She never asked if there was something somebody disliked or was allergic too. She never brought out any additional juice and never refilled any cups. She did bring extra coffee which was Maxwell House. The second morning, she ran out of food so she served some people less eggs or bacon than others just at random. When my plate was placed in front of me she realized my wife and I had some inconsistency in the food quantity on our plates so she, in front of me, took food off my plate with her hands and moved it to my wife's plate.
There was never any pleasantry from the host, Claudia. When we checked in we were immediately requested to pay our balance and then notified that we had to pay a 6% city tax that was never mentioned before. We were also told we didn't have to pay sales tax. We later found out that all the other guests didn't pay until their departure...odd. After we'd left and returned home we had 2 phone messages on our phone from Claudia. The first said we didn't pay her correctly, i.e. we didn't pay the 6% tax, which we had and that she expected us to immediately mail her a check. The second said she found it and never mind with no apology, no hope to see you soon, no nothing.
