This is definitely a country b&b, with old sloping wood floors, rattling windows when it's windy,
noisy plumbing, etc. If those things bother you, either bring some earplugs or go to a motel.
Otherwise it's charming and impeccably clean, with lots of closet and storage room, amazingly.
The big draw here is the Crippen's hospitality and generosity; you really feel like you're staying in their house, and they've provided free sodas and hot drinks and a bowl of their incredibly delicious mints.
Breakfast isn't quite up to the standards of dinner, but we were the only people who seemed to think so; others were raving about the "fresh squeezed" orange juice, which obviously wasn't and later appeared in a supermarket juice jug. The only failure in the charm department is the housekeeper who presides over breakfast and chides you for not eating earlier - "I started cooking this breakfast at 4:30 in the morning.." and actually the biscuits and eggs did taste like they were cooked five hours ago. Later she lapsed into Appalachian character mode and was quite entertaining.
The mattress wasn't bad but could have used a foam topper, and the bathroom could use
a nightlight. Otherwise this is a primo place to stay in Blowing Rock, and we're such insane
fans of the restaurant that it's very appealing to spend hours drinking by the fire and then
having a leisurely meal before tiptoeing up the staircase to retire.
