“Keeps getting better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2012

I recently had the opportunity to stay at the Thayer twice in a period of two weeks, and I can't say enough good things about it. I'm greeted at the door as soon as I enter, the reception desk staff is friendly and efficient, the rooms I had were clean, comfortable, and recently renovated. I ate in both the restaurant and the bar, and the food and service at both were excellent. I look forward to my next stay, which I hope will be soon.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms that have been dedicated to a West Point graduate.

“Shame on the owners of this historic property.”

We just returned from a visit to the Hudson River Valley area near West Point, and stayed 2 nights at The Thayer Hotel. What a disappointment! The 2 rooms we stayed in were light and airy, but quite shabby. The white bathroom linens were greyed and the floor mat was tattered. During a shower my husband took, the bathroom lights went completely off, leaving him in the dark, in the shower. I certainly support energy conservation wherever/whenever, but really....We had breakfast at the dining room for one morning of our visit, along with lots of flies, all over the buffet items, and buzzing at our table. Quite unappetizing! I wonder what agency does food inspections at the USMA. What a shame that this historic property has been so neglected, in a location where one would hope to find excellence! And no bargain prices here - we paid $229.00 per room per night!

“much improved property”

We stayed there in May 2008 and the room was a dump, and the staff for the most part was not helpful. It took a chat with the manager to get a few goodies to offset the room quality.
This time we stayed the rooms were refurbished and the new staff was very responsive. We had issues with a lack of towels, but the front desk had this taken care of. One thing I would do would to remind the housekeeping staff not to be texting when guests are walking by. It gives guests an impression that you are too busy with your personal business than to attend to guest needs.
The breakfast buffet's quality slipped a bit.

Room Tip: If you don't mind trains get a river view otherwise get an academy view

“So disappointed”

We went to a Communion party at the Hotel Thayer. I was so looking forward to it and I came out saying never again. The hotel itself is OK, just needs some work inside. The views are fantastic. The parking is horrendous ( you need to park across the street, if you find a space) and walk a steep incline. it's ok for some people, but I can see other individuals who may need help walking having a difficult time. The party was a 4 hour affair. The first 1 hour is the cocktail hour. First they had cheese and crackers, shrimp cocktail, fruit platter and a vegetable platter. The set up was bad. The dip for the vegetable platter was not even near the vegetable platter, so no one knew what it was for. Then, the staff walked around with about 5 different hot appetizers. they tasted like a supermarket brand appetizer. Then, after 1 1/2 ( with no hot food after 1 hour), we sat down to stale rolls on the table. We waited another 30 minutes for a salad. The salad was good. Next we waited another 30 minutes for our entree, either filet mignon or salmon. We had the filet mignon and it was covered with onion gravy! I never saw filet mignon in onion gravy. It was good, but not want I expected. Other individuals at our table had salmon, which after a few bites, was not touched ( I guess it didn't taste good). The kids had chicken fingers and french fries ( I tried the french fries and they were soggy, but the kids ate them anyhow). Considering the price for this place, I would expect higher quality food and better service (not waiting 30 minutes between courses). I would not recommend for a party, even though the views are outstanding.
