Pension Asensio is a small B& B ( about 7 rooms), situated on the N550 road at Goian, halfway between A Guarda and Tui in Southern Galicia. The Pension is spotlessly clean, and whilst the facilities are not luxurious everything worked, and at 42 euros per night for a double room and breakfast was good value. The primary reason to visit this Pension is to eat at the adjoining restaurant, also owned by the same couple. The food - everything fresh and local- is superb. Fernando and his wife Loli, who both speak good English, have run the restaurant for 19 years. Fernando can explain what the dishes are and then cook them for you. Goian is in the heart of the Albarino wine growing country, and Fernando has an excellent selection to choose from. The restaurant is open at lunchtimes if you are touring the area. Goian is 10 minutes across the bridge from Vila Nova de Cerveira in Portugal which has a huge market on Saturdays. Also worth visiting are the Celtic village ruins at A Guarda and the magnificent fortified Cathedral at Tui. Just across another bridge at Tui ( built by Eiffel) is Valenca which has its walled fortifications intact and makes for an interesting detour. If you enjoy excellent Spanish cooking then this is the place to visit.
