arrived at this place in the early hours of sunday 26th august no one there to greet us rep had to go looking for the owner got into the "room" no electricity, bathroom was like the black hole of calcutta i refused to unpack and at 9.00am went to get something to eat, a bun, cheese, ham and a boiled egg this in my mind is not bed and breakfast, my husbands egg was raw.
stayed in the room until 12.45pm went to the greeting meeting and imediately asked to be moved and explained to the rep why,had to pay to be moved i had to do any thing to get away from that dump, it was so far from anything, even the tumbleweeds didnt stop there owner was miserable and like previous visitors have stated wasnt fussed with the English, conversed with every other nationality, but was not fussed with the EnglishI wouldnot recommend this place and would say if youhave booked make sure you look for the place before you finalize

we arrived at the hotel for a one week stay, on first impressions i wanted to get on the next flight home.It was all overgrown with a small dog tied to a tree as soon as you walked down the driveway. After a day there i felt a little better it was nice and quiet but there was nothing to do within easy reach of the hotel, no good for teenagers i thought.. The best thing about the hotel was the swimming pool, but you had to be very careful as the steps into the pool were very slippy and i fell bruising both my arms badly.
Breakfast was the same every day served without smiles or politeness. Every evening the family who owned the hotel had quite a few family or friends around and it made you feel you were intruding because they always sat in the bar area. On the last day we were expected to vacate the rooms at 12, at 11.30 the maid knocked the door and i asked for another 10 mins she huffed and said ok but didnt like it. There are 2 parts to the hotel the back appartments are larger and have fridges but at the same cost as the front block.

  • Liked — the swimming pool because it wasnt crowded
  • Disliked — it was set on a main road leading to nowhere, had to catch buses or taxis

“Hotel Desperado”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2007

Arrived at the hotel on Sunday 12th August 2007. Room was dirty asked for it to be cleaned and was met with a frosty reception from the owner.

Breakfast wa the same every day, bread roll, ham, cheese and no smiles. Couldn't eat the breakfast last couple of days as so tasteless.

Air con was an additonal 50 Euros for the week.

Things went missing from peoples room when the cleaner had been in, when approached she went mental! Then the family who owned the hotel went mental.

Hotel not too bad, quiet, nice pool. The family favoured other guests, manily Greeks, had no time for the English who were all well behanved couples and couldn't work out the owner and his family.

Afandou was OK, no pavements on the walk into Afantou, the walk took about 20 minutes in sensible shoes, longer in heels.

Had to leave rooms at 12noon on the Saturday 18th August coach didn't arrive until 4am Sunday morning. Paid an additional 30 Euros to keep the room until 9pm, then had to sit on sun loungers until the coach arrived. The family went mad and starting shouting when other guests asked to put their bags in our room.

All the English guests called the owner Grumpy and the family and cleaner were very unhelpful couldn't give a toss attitude could almost spoil your holiday.

Would never go back and feel sorry for all the holiday makers arriving as we left.

“Should be called Hotel Despair not Despina”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2007

Just got back from Hotel Despina which we booked as a last minute getaway for a good price. The hotel rooms were clean and tidy (although they have no double beds just two singles pushed together!) and the pool was nice. There were several issues however 1) the hotel is a good 15min walk from Afandou centre and part of the way there are no pavements.
2) you pay 8 euro a day for aircon 3) the maid is absolutely terrifying-will smoke in your room (even if you don't smoke), will hassle you out of your room even if you ask her to come back the next day because you want a lie in, and, from the experiences of other guests will probably steal money and cigarettes.
4) Breakfast is an odd combination of bread roll, ham, cheese, bolied egg, cake and honey 5) they favour considerably their German guests and are on the brink of being downright rude to English guests.
5) If you need to keep your room on longer don't expect them to let you know before departure day if you are allowed. You will pay 20 euro to keep the room on til 8pm BUT do not offer to share that room with other guests as we did or they will shout at you a lot and post lookouts around the apartments to ensure you don't cheat and let other people up to your room for a shower.

All in all for the money the facilities were fine and the walk into town does not seem too bad as long as you wear sensible shoes and are relatively fit and healthy, the holiday was marred considerably however by the hostile nature of the family who run the hotel ( we were the first English tourists to visit and were not badly behaved so I can't see why they disliked us so much), this was also the excperience of the other 6 English people who were there at the same time.
