“Not upto the name and History”

I stayed in this hotel for a night on 11 Jan 2012. This was not planned stay in Kisoro, so booking was not done.

After reaching hotel we enquired for the rooms. Two rooms were shown to us - one was suit while other was double bed room. We liked the suit and asked for rate - after some discussions, we were offered a discount. We paid and without taking possession of the room, we went to visit Kisoro.

After reaching in the hotel in the evening, I was shocked, as we were allocated double bed room for the price of suite. After questioning, I was only offered apologies. Excuse was given - no water in the suit, but it must be known to the hotel staff, before showing the room to the guest.

It might be a case of mis-information from the hotel staff, but why I have to suffer?

The hotel layout is good, rooms are OK, but beware of cheating.

Room Tip: See the room, and take possession before hotel staff change their mind.

“Better than most Ugandan Guesthouses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

I've lived in Uganda for quite some time now and unless you want to stay in a 5-star $200+/night safari lodge, you aren't going to get any better than this. The rooms are clean. The showers have water pressure and hot water. The food is better than most at a reasonable price. I really enjoyed my stay and highly recommend it as an alternatively to the expensive safari lodges.

“Comfortable Hotel in Kisoro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

We stayed here for one night, but ate here two nights. On arrival we received a warm welcome and a friut juice.
Our room was pleasant with comfortable twin beds with mosquito nets, [but we weren't bothered by mosquitos here]. The front window looked over the courtyard and the back window looked onto the garden. There was a table and chairs, and two bedside tables.
The bathroom was a good size with plenty of hot water in the shower.
The resident's bar/lounge area was very comfortable with an open fire.
The food was mainly good. There were a lot of vegetable dishes.
We also stayed in the Kisoro Tourist Hotel for one night, and would say that theTravellers Rest is the better place to stay.

“Very good option in Kisoro”

This is a small, simple place, but it is very clean and comfortable. Within walking distance to the center of town if you want to go shopping or get on the internet. Rooms are clustered around a central courtyard. There is a bar and fireplace in the common area. On site laundry service. Meals in the on site restaurant have to be ordered in advance as there is usually only one or two choices for breakfast and dinner. They offer basic packed lunches for gorilla trekking, but a juice box in there would have been nice. Note that they are about 40kms from the gorilla trekking, which requires nearly a two hour drive (in good conditions) to get to the park office. In bad weather or heavy rain, the road into the mountains may not be passable, as happened with me. Overall, a good place to stay in Kisoro.

“Decent hotel in Kisoro”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights using it as a base for Mgahinga National Park.
The room we were in had twin beads with mosquito nets (not that we needed them) and was nice and toasty warm at night compared to our previous lodge in Volcanoes National Park.
The lodge has a nice bar area with comfy chairs and open fire.
The showers are excellent with loads of hot water.
The food was edible but nothing special. It was very hit and miss with some dishes being nice and other being either very bland or very oily.
They have dancers from a local orphanage who come and give performances in the evening
The owners have 2 dogs who are good fun to play with but quite large - if you are scared of dogs this is not the place for you.
Our biggest issue with this place is that it was quite noisy. All the rooms are built round a separate quadrangle and the noise really carries. You will be awake until the last guest/staff member goes to bed at night and you will wake up when the first guest gets their wake up call in the morning...and don't even get me started on the noise that wheely suitcases make at unseasonable hours of the morning!

We arrived in Kisoro at around lunch time intending to go to the national park in the afternoon. We were told that the national park didn't run activities in the afternoon, unless they had already been sorted out in the morning and that if we went to the national park HQ no-one would be there. So instead we did a village walk and visited a local school which was good fun.

The following day we went early to the national park and did golden monkey trekking in the morning followed by a nature walk in the afternoon.

We were a bit dissapointed with the golden monkey trekking. We'd previously done the same thing in Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and felt this was much better. In Volcanoes NP the terrain is flat, the monkeys have been habituated for longer and come much closer and you are allowed to use flash to take photos. In Mgahinga you can't use flash, you don't get close to the monkeys and its a tough walk up a very steep hill.

We then did a nature walk in the national park the same day, which we'd organised that morning. We saw some birds (including a Rwenzori turaco), with most of the birds being in the open areas towards the end of the walk. We didn't see any in the forested areas. We didn't see any other animals.
