After visiting two lovely pieceful resorts in Zanzibar we spent our last two nights in Stone Town.
I can say that my first impression was a bit of a shock. However after waking up nice and fresh the following day, and being a little more open minded, we did enjoy our stay.
However, I would not have liked to have stayed any longer than the two nights. It is an amazing place with lots of winding roads, like walking round a maze, and lots of little shops selling mostly the same stuff! We got lost quite a few times trying to find our way back to the hotel, especially at night.
The hotel is charming with lots of character. We were booked in the South room, booked with Imagine Africa who recommended this room, and did advise that you do need to pick your rooms wisely here, so thank you Imagine Africa. When we arrived we were taken to the wrong room, I think it was the South. This room was really disappointing and the room was small and dingy, the bathroom was outside in the open with a little table and chairs. However I don't want to be getting out of bed and having to go outside to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It was also a bit grubby and the water didn't work very well. After realising we hadn't booked this room we did move to the East room. This was lovely and spacious and the decor was great, had a lot of charm and character, and was tastefully decorated with antique Zanzibar furniture . The room was on the top floor, well the one before the restaurant. There is no lift but lots of steps, very high steps. It is not for the unfit! We had our first meal in the restaurant. I most say this was really disappointing and the worse meal we had all the holiday. Breakfast was a little poor also, but the view was great, but different!
The hotel is definitely not for everyone, and if your looking for luxury, this isn't the hotel for you.
If your looking for something a little different, then this place should deliver a truly memorable Zanzibari experience.
Thank you to Ben and Imagine Africa who organised our stay in Zanzibar. They do a great job and come highly recommended.
