“Just ok”

After visiting two lovely pieceful resorts in Zanzibar we spent our last two nights in Stone Town.
I can say that my first impression was a bit of a shock. However after waking up nice and fresh the following day, and being a little more open minded, we did enjoy our stay.
However, I would not have liked to have stayed any longer than the two nights. It is an amazing place with lots of winding roads, like walking round a maze, and lots of little shops selling mostly the same stuff! We got lost quite a few times trying to find our way back to the hotel, especially at night.
The hotel is charming with lots of character. We were booked in the South room, booked with Imagine Africa who recommended this room, and did advise that you do need to pick your rooms wisely here, so thank you Imagine Africa. When we arrived we were taken to the wrong room, I think it was the South. This room was really disappointing and the room was small and dingy, the bathroom was outside in the open with a little table and chairs. However I don't want to be getting out of bed and having to go outside to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It was also a bit grubby and the water didn't work very well. After realising we hadn't booked this room we did move to the East room. This was lovely and spacious and the decor was great, had a lot of charm and character, and was tastefully decorated with antique Zanzibar furniture . The room was on the top floor, well the one before the restaurant. There is no lift but lots of steps, very high steps. It is not for the unfit! We had our first meal in the restaurant. I most say this was really disappointing and the worse meal we had all the holiday. Breakfast was a little poor also, but the view was great, but different!
The hotel is definitely not for everyone, and if your looking for luxury, this isn't the hotel for you.
If your looking for something a little different, then this place should deliver a truly memorable Zanzibari experience.
Thank you to Ben and Imagine Africa who organised our stay in Zanzibar. They do a great job and come highly recommended.

Room Tip: Get advise about the room you book. Didn't see them all but some are better than others.

“Amazing tower top roof!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We didn't stay for the night there. We only bumped into the hotel accidentally. We went up to the roof top and had lunch and some drinks. The food was very good and prices ok. The views are just amazing!! I'd say it is a must go for lunch, drinks or a sundowner The staff was so friendly! They seemed to be very happy and treated well so they were really hospitable.

“Charming Hotel, Horrible location”

We should have listened to our travel agent and only spent one night here and moved on to Fundu Lagoon- but we thought it would be great to experience the town and Zanzibar. The hotel is very charming, although it does need a good clean and some renovations. The view from the balcony is great and the staff were very friendly.

Unfortunately the location ruins it for this hotel. Stone Town is a dump, it is noisy, filthy and apparently dangerous (when the hotel recommends that a security guard walk you to and collect you from a restaurant that is 5 minutes away you had to to be concerned). The restaurant next door was great- unfortunately I cannot recall the name. Don't eat from the BBQs on the beach- the fish or meat sits outside for at least an hour before it is cooked and ice seems to be a foreign concept. If you go to Zanzibar go to one of the resorts on the coast- or skip it completely.

Nice building, rooms are really huge, 40 sq meters at least, and really well furnished. The staff is kind and smiley but is not able to really help you as they should (they are not able to call an airline to confirm the ticket for you). Breakfast is not surprising but is good. Please consider 3 important facts:1 the hotel is a pedonal area, no taxi is allowed to get there. While when you leave the hotel a guy can help you, when you arrive it could be a mess.2 to reach the rooms and the breakfast area you must literally "climb" houndreds of high steps. It's characteristic and due to the original architecture of the building, but if you have any discapacity avoid it absolutely. 3 Avoid the rooms on the square. In this square every night local people cook, shout, cry till late..
