Apologies for the length of this review but we have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Lux (previously Les Pavillons) & have new info if you are about to go.
Firstly some background - we were due to go in April 2011, having booked in May 2010. On the actual day of flight we had to cancel due to family bereavement. We were devastated but rebooked to travel on 28th Dec, 20 months after the original booking. Our expectations were impossibly high - and we were not disappointed!
The hotel, location, beach etc, are amazing, the staff, food, service, cleanliness is first class.
We chose a deluxe room & opted for the Pure Discovery package. For us half board is false economy, we calculated that lunch, cocktails, wine etc in average amounts would have cost us around £250 per day - yes, it is very expensive - the PD package costs less than this, about £120 per day, so we were able to have everything we wanted & no shock bill on checkout.
Our 1st floor room was spacious with a wonderful bed, shower, jacuzzi & walk-in wardrobe, well stocked mini bar & private balcony. The decor is mostly dark wood, it isn't gloomy, in fact with air con & ceiling fan, its a pleasant retreat from the heat outside.
Checkin was efficient & speedy but the PD explanation is confusing. After a couple of days I found that a leaflet is available at reception & I suggested that it should be provided immediately on checking in or, a copy should be placed in the room.
You have to sign for everything apart from breakfast & dinner - once the staff know that you are on PD, they zero the bill but we kept track at reception every few days, better than having a query at the end of the holiday.
Since the change of name, the restaurants are now called as follows, Horizon is now The Kitchen. Obergine is now The Beach & the Nautile Bar has become Cafe Lux, Nipa remains the same.
We tried each one, all excellent but our favourite for dinner was The Beach buffets - I have never before been offered lobster, foie gras, red snapper, venison, fillet of beef, marlin & guinea fowl as well as several other main dishes on a buffet. The lobster, venison, beef etc is cooked in front of you & the other choices are in heated containers standing on induction plates, even the plates are kept in heated wells, so no cold food!
We frequently met Ravi, the Executve Sous Chef & were able to see him & his staff preparing the dishes - live cooking is now a feature in all the restaurants.
We enjoyed a 7 course gala dinner on NYE, by the pool, with hats, masks, a champagne fountain plus a live band - fantastic & at midnight many of the guests jumped fully clothed into the pool dancing to the music.
We also enjoyed the Island Night held on the beach with pig roast traditional Mauritian food, bonfire & sega dancers. Different & quite special.
We also visited Casela Park for the interaction with lions, tigers & cheetahs. You have to sign an indemnity before going into the enclosures (with guards/guides) so you can be close to the animals & stroke them. there is a professional photographer along & afterwards you can buy a dvd with approx 120 photos, for about £22. Can be a bit nerve wracking as the animals are often walking around you. 4 lions in one enclosure, 3 or 4 tigers & you!
We also used a local taxi driver, Idriss for a day trip to Grand Bassin to see the hindu temples, coloured sands tec. He is a very reasonable informative guide with good english - just ask the guys outside at reception, they will ring for you.
Met the Resident Manager, Rocco at the cocktail party & several times afterwards, to quote "we are not the best, but we are trying to be "
If you have small children the kid's club "Play" is excellent & free. No irritating animation teams here thank goodness. The club starts at 9.30 until 21.45 - there are many unusual & varied activities, even including "lets shower" before bedtime. there are 3 meals provided of which you pay for 2. There is a daily newsletter giving more info - if you would like a copy please feel free to email me.
Evening entertainment is very good with a 6 piece band, a swing night, disco etc but fortunately no karaoke.
We have no complaints but I should mention that the sand is fine coral & at times uncomfortable to walk on, particularly to the left of the beach where they are building the St Regis - in the middle & to the right it's better.
The alfresco dining & the open air restaurants have problems with flies at times, not so much birds, but this is inevitable unless the restaurants are air conditioned which detracts from the pleasure of dining outside, so no real solution.
Think that's about it except to say Hi to Rocco & Ravi plus all the staff who made our holiday.
Would we go again? Possibly not as there are far too many beautiful parts of the world still to visit, but we wouldn't have missed it for anything.
Room Tip: deluxe rooms have more privacy
