“ROASTED EGG WITH FIVES SPICES...... & ANTS EVERYWHERE”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2011

Thank God this hotel was next to the best public beach in Mauritius. I knew it wasn't going to be a 5 star experience but nevertheless i thought it would be clean.
Ants were crawling everywhere in the room i stayed in. I woke up with them crawling on them on the bed.
The place is a mosquito haven - so be sure to bring your vape in the room. It smelt like a sewer outisde the room. (we had a ground floor room)
Cats and sickly kittens roam everywhere - and give you shrek eyes as you eat in the dining area. But some might like that... They get well fed because the food is terrible. For example for an appetiser we were given a roasted egg with 5 spice - a hard boiled egg with a brown coating- it was vile. Nothing much tasted fresh. Desserts were disgusting unless you are used to fake cream etc. However we were able to change our 'spaghetti bolognaise' option for grilled dorade which was fine. Dont expect anything much for breakfast- pattiserie isnt fresh and no fruit is available. Soups were disgusting - but i did see other people eating it. Asian people - stay away from this place - you will be disappointed.
A kettle was provided in the room - but no where to plug it in. Ants all over it. Bathroom ok- shower decently powerful.
No entertainment was given on a Friday night- but we were told they would sega on Fri night.
Staff were chatty and helpful - but one guy was really rude when we forgot to 'sign off' after eating- as we werent aware that drinks were not included in half board.
Great areas to relax and sun bathe in front the sea though. Pereybere is the best- watch out for the tortoises that live there.
Money would be better spent on renting an apartment - many around.

“TO BE AVOIDED !!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2011

The hotel has a great location but it's the worse possible service one can possibly ask for.

The bed sheets were always smelly and humid despite several request to change them.
The food was terrible, we had to leave the hotel everyday to eat despite breakfast and diner was included in our package.
The employees didn't speak proper english which made it difficult to be understood.
Mostly indians, staff and tourists.

“Relaxing, Simple, Fantastically Affordable Vacation from S Africa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2009

We stayed here and I have to say, regardless of other people's negative reviews, this hotel is unbelievably pleasant, shockingly affordable for a couple on a South African budget it was PERFECT for us. If you're looking for pampering and 5 star treatment, don't stay at a 3 star hotel. This is perfect if you want simplicity without sacrificing a comfortable bed, decent meal, and great beach access.
The room was spacious, air conditioned (thank god!), and I loved the foliage hanging throughout the walkways to the rooms. We stayed on a Half Board plan, which includes breakfast and dinner. Both meals were filling, simple, and had enough variety that we didn't bother going on elsewhere our entire stay, except for lunch.

Directly to the left of the hotel is a private beach which hotel guests have access to, with a fabulous reef to snorkel and dive through, which we spent most of our time doing. Snorkeling gear is provided for free which (as an American originally, where you pay for everything) I was shocked by! There were beach towels at the front desk for our use as well.

Grand Baie is one of the best areas of Mauritius, and the convenience and accessibility of this hotel will definitely have us staying there again. I hear a rumor my bf may need to go back, and I'm excited already!

Again, to summarize, simple hotel, VERY clean, comfortable beds, great linens, air conditioned rooms, awesomely affordable with meal plans included, beautiful private beach access with a reef for snorkeling, and simple but helpful staff. I will definitely stay here again.

“Good value for money hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2008

My wife and I went stayed at the Hibiscus in February as guests at a wedding at the nearby Grand Mauritian which is only a 15 minute drive away.

We'd booked it last minute and was very cheap so weren't expecting too much from the hotel. We booked it with the full board option.

We hired a car from the airport and was about 1 and a half hours drive. Its an easy drive staight up the motorway which ends at Grand Baie about 5 minutes from hotel. Is pretty difficult to get lost on the way up to the hotel.

Check in was relatively easy and were given a drink and were shown to our room which was massive. It was on the top floor and had a huge (very comfortable) bed, balcony and bathroom with whirlpool corner bath for two. We were amazed given the price. There was also a plasma tv and had placed flowers in the room. If did have a slightly unfinished feel though.

The beach was OK as it was just with sand with loungers on it and not strictly a beach going into the sea, more like rocks. There was also a nice pool and jacuzzi in the hotel, they also served drinks to the loungers and had a scuba diving centre. There was a normal beach next door to the hotel though which was public and had more watersports available, guys selling coconuts to drink from and cocktails etc.

The bar and restaurant area were nice, though very quiet, and the food was excellent. Breakfast was a buffet, lunch was 3 courses and dinner was 5 courses. Again given what we'd paid this was excellent and was mainly nice local fish/seafood with salad and vegetables. The waiters were excellent and very friendly. Outside the hotel there were 2 or 3 bars and restaurants which were quite reasonable (£5 for a pizza etc). This would be needed if staying here for any length of time as there wasn't much life in the bar while we were there. Grand Baie is only five minutes by cab down the road aswell with loads of restaurants and bars.

We did see a cockraoch in our room while we were there but this didn't really put us off and could happen in the nicest hotel as far as I'm concerned given the climate.

Reception assured us they would be there when we got back late from the wedding and were true to their word. They rushed out and opened the doors even though it looked closed which was excellent. There was always a security guy sat by the gate no matter when we went in or out aswell.

Overall this was an excellent hotel and a real bargain. The food and service were really good the only shame being that it was quiet and there wasn't alot of atmosphere so would need to travel to Grand Baie for some excitement if staying for a week or longer. But for a purely relaxing holiday with a quiet drink in the evening it would be ideal.

“Hotel is ok, but the restaurant should be avoided”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2008

Dined at the Hibiscus restaurant a few times. The food only barely reaches acceptable level, and is overpriced. Staff tried to rip us off using the old "there is no menu" trick on several occasions.

We stayed in Pereybere for two weeks in March 2008. The village is relaxed and quiet, however Grand Baie is just a 5 min bus ride away for those seeking entertainment.
