After staying for three days at the Jefferson Clinton in Syracuse, I understand their #1 ranking in Syracuse. Indeed, they would be #1 in so many places. Here is why:
Location: I know that Syracuse is not exactly a wild and crazy sort of place. But, Armory Square is a nice downtown location with various dining and pubbing options a short walk away. Places like Dinosaur BBQ, the Blue Tusk and Empire Suds. it is also near the MoST and convenient to Supreme Court.
Amenities: In a word - amazing. I am typing this from the business center in the Hotel on my last day here. I did not bring my computer but understand that the rooms have free high speed internet as well. I am a workout freak and the exercise room here is one of the better ones that I have encountererd. No pool or sauna, but top of the line weight station, bike, treadmill and elliptical. Also free weights and an exercise mat. The room has ample towels and free earbuds for the TVs attached to each machine.
Many hotels include breakfast. I know, I know, boring processed foods supplemented by a make your own waffle machine. Not here my friends. At the JC there is a dedicated omelet chef who makes your omelets to order. Really. There are great bagels, wonderful muffins, yogurt and fruit. The bacon was actually crispy. Best hotel breakfast - EVER. And while we are on the topic of food, Tuesday night I came up from the exercise room and found a free social hour. The hotel put out a spread of meats, cheeses, popcorn shrimp, egg rolls - along with beer [I had Sam Adams] and wine. There is always free coffee, tea and water in the lobby - and often fresh fruit as well.
Many hotels provide you with a newspaper - almost always the McPaper - USA today. At the JC - you get the Times, the WSJ as well as the local paper. Yeah, they got the USA Today also.
One of my pet peeves is Hotels that offer you movies that you can buy on screen for about the price of seeing them in the theaters. Here, there is a video library. You just borrow the DVD and watch it in your room. I was suprised that they not only gave me the disc, but also a bag of popcorn to go with it.
The Room: I received a free upgrade to a Suite. The front room had a kitchen that I did not use, but it is great that it is there. There is also a desk with a comfy chair, a couch and a large TV. The coffee table had a nice book about the history of Syracuse. The bedroom had one of the more comfy beds that I have slept in. Another TV was there as well as ample closet and dresser space.
The bathroom was again a cut above. From the double headed shower with great water pressure to the Bee Kind bath products. And like the room, was kept very clean and tidy.
The only ding that I have is that these are older windows that do not cancel sound. I had a room on the second floor, and did hear some traffic and pedestrian noise. I suppose that they would have given me a higher floor if I asked, but I can sleep through anything so it is not a problem with me. If you are a light sleeper, however, ask for an upper floor.
Service: In a word - excellent. I e-mailed two questions to the hotel prior to my stay, and they were both answered promptly. I needed a room to prepare with a client, and they were happy to provide the same. The staff behind the desk were pleasant and engaging. Everyone had a nice smile and a kind word.
Service and attitude can make or break a stay. At the Hotel Jefferson Clinton, it appears that they will go out of their way to make your stay comfortable.
Conclusion: This historic hotel has been fully renovated and modernized. It was a joy to stay in a hotel that is not out of the same generic mold. While the hotel Jefferson Clinton did the big things right - it is the little things that made this a truely special stay. Thanks.
Room Tip: The lower room may have street noise. If you are a light sleeper, ask for an upper floor.
