Small, beautiful hotel with very good service and nice - but tiny - rooms. We stayed labor day weekend, just a few days after Hurricane Irene hit the hamptons and NYC. Our original reservation was for the weekend of the hurricane, and the hotel was very courteous and helpful about moving our reservation and changing our dates to another weekend. Thank you to Glennon Travis, the hotel manager, for being so accommodating.
This hotel is an old roadside motel converted into a hip, boutique hotel. You can still see the "bones" of the old hotel - old doors that don't fit quite right, old bathroom with tub/shower. It was recently refurbished with bright airy decorations - a big mirror in the bedrooms make the room feel not so small, a pastel-coloured, hand-painted mural above the bed, and a bar and Nobu restaurant attached.
The location is along Montauk Highway, the main road through the Hamptons. It is very close to the Main Street area of Southampton, but very far from the nearest beach. Having a car is absolutely necessary, especially when the restaurant is closed.
The room was very basic, NO TELEVISION, NO TELEPHONE, an old air conditioning unit, and a simple bed with basic linens. The bathroom has a very old tub and shower, but it appears to have a designy new sink. Despite the refurbishments, the rooms are showing scuff marks and need some help. That said, the room was comfortable and made for a nice launching pad for the hamptons. We didn't spend a great deal of time inside.
There was free wifi, and an ipod player in the room which was nice.
The restaurant and bar were closed the first night due to hurricane damage, so we ate out. We did not eat at Nobu, but it looked very crowded when open. At night, a sceney crowd descends upon the outdoor bar and there was a DJ playing music until the early morning. The hipster bearded bartender, Nick, makes an excellent Lychee Martini.
Saturday night was loud and crowded, but we didn't mind. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for older people or couples with children.
Service at the hotel is very good. An attentive concierge at the reception desk helped with beach access, directions around the hamptons, and dinner reservations. Housekeepers were friendly and attentive. The hotel manager was a good host and offered us a bottle of rose because the bar was closed. Once the restaurant and bar reopened, the poolside drink service was truly luxurious.
Overall, it was a nice weekend, but very pricey.
