“Quaint town with unique shops”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2007

The Packwood House is located on the main street in Skaneateles, NY right across from the lake. It's a quaint little town with many unique shops to browse in. Although the hotel was nice, there was nothing spectacular about it. My sister and I went for a girls getaway/shopping trip. We wanted to stay at the Sherwood Inn, but it was booked. We opted for the Packwood figuring it was only 3 doors down and owned by the same people. We had a lakeview room with 2 double beds, and altogether it cost $220! The only thing special about the room was that they folded the towels (and toilet paper) in a fancy fan shape. The rest of it was very basic. It was also quite noisy. Our room was on the front of the hotel facing the street, so we heard the traffic as well as teens skateboarding down the sidewalk. Our room adjoined the room next to us, and there was a crying toddler in that room! We were NOT happy. We could hear it all. The beds were nice and comfortable. There was a microwave, fridge, hair dryer and iron/board. They served a continental breakfast outside the elevator, but there wasn't much to it. We opted to go over to the Sherwood Inn for the complimentary breakfast buffet, which was excellent. If you're in town, make sure you stop into the Sherwood for a meal. As far as the Packwood House goes, I would not stay there again mainly because it was far more expensive than what it was worth.

“Loved the Packwood House”

Great spot once we found it; I neglected to read the entire lengthy confirmation letter which says to check-in at the Sherwood Inn, once that was done we found the free underground parking and off to our room. Now this is what I call 'luxury', beautiful appointed bathroom, real tile, real granite, lots of fluffy towels. The bed was sooo comfy with lots of pillows there were even real wine glasses. We had a corner room facing the lake. Breakfast was served at the Sherwood Inn and was included in the rate.
Skaneateles is such a scenic town, a great jumping off point to visit the eastern Finger Lakes. Friday night we took the plunge and waited in line at Doug's Fish Fry, the line moved quickly and what great fish and chips. Our second night we ate at Joe's Pasta Garage, unfortunately we didn't make reservations and had about a 30 minute wait, but it was well worth it. Definately will go back to all three places.

  • Liked — Quality of accommodation lived up to the rate paid.
  • Disliked — Check in process at off site location.

“Overall Good Stay”

Stayed at the Packwood for 1 night for a wedding at the Sherwood:
Positives: Overall very nice, clean, modern hotel, My room had a VERY comfortable king size bed. The front desk checked us in an hour early upon request. Also had a refrigerator and microwave. Nice view across from the lake. Our room didn't have a balcony, but some had them.
Negatives: Our refrigerator was gross inside - someone's leftovers and lots of dripping water. I called the front desk 3 times in 2 hours and they kept promising me someone would come but no one did. I was surprised they didn't come, they kept insisting they would send someone.
Overall: a pleasant stay (except for the fridge). I would return but would prefer to stay at their main property - The Sherwood. Rooms are roughly same price and it's beautiful there.
Call ahead especially in busy season -- The Sherwood was my first choice, and booked.

“Loved the Packwood but not so sure about the town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2007

We visited Skaneateles for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed the Packwood. We stayed in one of the best rooms, a king suite with a balcony. The room was great, the bed was one of the comfiest I've every slept in and it was nice to sit out on the balcony and watch the goings on. Our stay was Sunday through Thursday, with the hope that it wouldn't be terribly busy in town.

The day we arrived we were bombarded with noise. If it wasn't the Harleys, it was the semis clamoring up and down the main drag. It was constant from about 7:00 am to 9:30 pm. When we sat outside to enjoy the view we could barely talk to each other because we couldn't hear over the noise. Fortunately our room was very soundproof and we just had to close the doors and were able to block out most of the noise. There was also a smell that I could only say smelled a bit like goat cheese that would come and go, both in the room and outside. The shops were cute but pricey and we didn't see anything we wanted to buy, even though they had sidewalk sales.

Skaneateles is a great town for food. The restaurants were awesome. There wasn't much opportunity for lake access, other than a small gated beach that was never open. There was a private dock area where people let their dogs swim. We couldn't find any other public parks on the lake. You could take a cruise on one of the big boats in town, but I would have preferred a public beach. There seemed to be only one marina where you could rent boats. The weather was cool and rainy so we nixed that idea.

We did enjoy driving around the other lakes to visit the wineries. Being mid-summer there were surprisingly very few boats out on any of the lakes (must be the gas prices) One of the days that we toured the lakes they were as smooth as glass. My personal preferences are Keuka and Cayuga as far as beauty and accessibility. I think next time we'll rent a cottage on one of them to enjoy some peace and quiet.

The Packwood is a great place to stay and Skaneateles is a cute town, if you can stand the noise.
