Recently my husband and I had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Hummingsbird Home B & B. We selected the Lilac room, a beautiful, spacious accommodation on the second floor with a private bath and fireplace. The experience we had for the four days we were there can only be described as staying with old friends, not just lodging. Our hostess, Sabina, was gracious and welcoming, and the breakfast we were served every morning was fabulous. The grounds around the home made it a place where you could stroll around the gardens and the gazabo, and relax while taking in the scenic countryside. Sabina was extremely helpful in answering questions about attractions in the area, restaruants, and directions to get there. In short, we have never been more pleased with a vacation experience, and we would highly recommend the Hummingbird Home B&B for anyone visiting the Skaneateles area.

But, Hummingbird is just about ok.
My husband and I are avid B&B ers and would definitely not rate this as our best experience.
The quality of the bed, linen, toileteries etc is top notch and place looks, smells and is clean and well-kept. But some how, we felt we were overpaying for the small room (the Lilac Room).
The website claims there is a 'fireplace' in each room and we were excited at the prospect. But it turns out that it is nothing but an electronic makebelieve screen of glass with a heating coil at the top!
Frankly, I was quite disappointed by it.
However, the Innkeeper Sabina was charming - to say the least and the breakfast she served us was decent -we are vegetraians and she served us crispy pancakes and, the best tea I've had in a while (apart from some bread - but i've had more sumptous breakfasts for the price i've paid)
Overall, I'd rate the place 2.5 on a scale of 1 to 5.
We checked out the rooms at the Sherwood Inn and for the same price, they offer a spectacular view of the pristine, crystal clear lake. But, it's a larger place with several rooms......not a 'cozy' B&B.

Sabina welcomes guests to her historic B&B with gracious hospitality and delicious cooking. Rooms are well equipped and comfortable, and wi-fi is a plus for keeping up on email. Skaneateles is probably the most beautiful town in the Finger Lakes. If you like spas, stay at the Hummingbird but use the fab spa facilities at nearby Mirbeau spa.

My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Hummingbirds Home. It's a good thing we had not seen nor listened to the negative review below, because if we had, we might have deprived ourselves of one of the nicest, warmest B&B experiences we've had in the Finger Lakes region. Please... go there and form your own opinion. You will be pleased that you did.

Sabina is a most accomplished innkeeper and no novice to hospitality. She makes a lovely breakfast. Our room was comfortable and sweetly appointed, our accomodations immaculate. The B&B is located about a mile from the center of town, in a quiet location. We also had the loan of Max the dog to pet, since we were missing our own.

We have friends who have owned and run an old inn for decades. They've told us similar stories. Innkeepers may be able to control many things, but an uncontrollable factor is how guests may behave after they arrive. Even with the most tactful handling on the innkeepers or their representative's part, some people may refuse to cooperate. Running an inn is not an easy task, and pleasing everyone, as you can tell, is well nigh impossible.
