We last visited friends that live in Saugerties during May, 2011. The campground is just a short ride to downtown Saugerties and everything it has to offer. Rip Van Winkle is one of the more rustic campgrounds we've used other than some state and federal parks. We like that the sites are spaced rather far apart and it offers sites in the back of the park across from the river which we found to be quiet and peaceful. The gal that checked us in called it "no mans land". It rained quite a bit while we were there but it didn't present much of a problem, at least for the site we had. We camped in a 30 foot trailer in May and plan on taking our new motorcoach there next time. The roads are graveled and could use some maintenance but it dosen't bother us - it has a tendency to slow folks down which is a good thing. We enjoyed camping here and plan on making a yearly return. One last note: You can forfeit the five dollar refund for the card used to open the gate. Keep the campground gate entry card if you plan on returning to receive future camping discounts up to 20% off regular prices.
