“There should be a SIX Star Rating!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Having never been to this wonderful place on earth, ‘The Adirondacks’, being able to breathe and experience its tranquility and stunning beauty as guests of ‘The Point’ was truly a decadent experience! What a truly marvelous place to relax and get your karma back in balance!

We took the air shuttle from Boston to Lake Saranac, and were picked up at the airport by one of The Point’s delightful staff, ‘Amanda’. From the (very small) Lake Saranac Airport we drove through the tree laced Adirondacks Mountains (uh, hills) and finally came to the quietly unmarked private road that leads to the even more private ‘Point’ gate. You just immediately know you are about to enter a very special and serene place as you approach the grounds.

Once we had arrived at the groomed and pristine estate, we were welcomed with champagne and a tour by The Point’s Camp's Manager, Megan and Asst Mgr, Cameron; these professionals treat you like you are family. And yes, THAT is the quintessentially unique element that The Point promotes… the concept that all its Guests are special, and ‘Family’. Each staff member was a delight. From the seasoned ‘Point’ Staff to the returning guests and the ‘newbies’ (us), you will be greeted, treated like royalty, and yes, you will be stunned by the simple little ways that they seem to listen, hear, know, and then employ all your most special wishes…. seamlessly!

So let’s talk about meals at The Point. Yeah, it IS a wee bit odd for the un-initiated, but dinner time is one of those ‘Family’ time experiences… only here you are seated with strangers - who by the end of the meal seem like dear friends. Honestly! While some of the visitors decided to dine alone - or with the known guests they may have come here with, we took the suggestion of our Rockefeller Guides and joined another family in the main dining room for an absolutely marvelous evening experience. What was quite amusing, and very wise, is that the Camp’s Manager, Megan, joined us for dinner. It became clear that as The Point clearly wishes its guests to experience the classical aura of times past; the VERY professional staff who eat with the guests are there to facilitate and promote conversation and good times. And yeah, it actually WORKS! What a delightful experience dinner time here at The Point is. It is a throwback to the period where chivalry was a way of social decorum; where gentlemen dressed for dinner and ladies wore their dress finery. In so far as we have sadly become accustomed to dining at even the nicest eateries that now encourage clientele to dress ‘casually’ (anything you want to wear but with a shirt and shoes), the point is surely a special walk in the ‘Past’.

Ah yes, and then there is the food. No, you just cannot ethically use the mundane and pedestrian term... 'food'. The very affable and brilliant strawberry headed Englishman Chef, Mark Levy... and his and marvelous kitchen staff will mesmerize your taste buds with culinary acumen! Seriously, this IS the truth! The connoisseur and the novice will alike be lulled into epicurean indulgence. And no, this is not a place where Florine Marks of Weight Watchers will advise the ‘weight conscious’ to come! This is rather a very special place on our planet where you should come to utterly unwind, and disentangle yourself from any and all forces of conflict and the taught ‘need’ for permission. Here you simply eat well (and decadently), drink (yeah, there are fully stocked open bar stations all over the property!), be merry, and uhhhh, don’t do much else... unless you want to.

When you combine the amazing and indulgent gourmet fare, the stunning sights of Saranac Lake, the Oh-Too-Cool little handmade polished teak motor boats that you can freely explore the entire Lake in, and the ridiculously beautiful rooms and suites at The Point, you will not be able to NOT fall stupidly in love with this place!

The Point was originally built in the early 1930s as Camp Wonundra—the mountain lake home of William Avery Rockefeller. It has been preserved – and splendidly restored – with the most indulgent of improvements that even the most well healed and well travelled visitor will greatly appreciate. It is indeed a blessed gift for the spirit.

Lastly, apart from only a few days of the year, The Point is NOT a place for the ‘young family’ to vacation. The accommodations at The Point are restricted to those eighteen years and older… and as such, it is a retreat from just about everything and anything that might otherwise intrude on your journey to this stunning escape from everyday reality.

So can you award Six Stars?!

Room Tip: Just let the staff know what you enjoy, and do not enjoy. They will take it from there. I recall cas...

“We’ll be back! (Again)”

It is easy to see why so many of the guests at The Point are repeat visitors. This place is so special and so unique it seems nearly impossible to find an experience that might top it. We’ve been twice – a first stay in Trappers (very cozy & romantic) and the most recent stay in the Boathouse (exceeded expectations!). The attention to detail is amazing—from the towel warmers and the heated bathroom floors to the way the firewood is stacked in your room. I hesitate to give too many details of just how extraordinary this place is because I suspect that so much of experience is the element of surprise at the lengths the staff will go to insure that your retreat is amazing. While we will likely spend the next couple of years looking for that next great getaway venue, I suspect we will return to The Point a couple of years from now and agree that it still sets the bar.

“The Big Camp Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

The welcome is like to a home. The setting is magnificent. The cabins are dreams, the fireplaces, the views...

The beautyful Hacker Craft boat, the nice electric boats, the lunch cruises in the electric glass boat...

The dinner parties, yes they are parties, it is all in the tradition of the 'Big Camp Era'.

Food is good, sometimes excellent, service is the same.

The party dining does of course have its risks but pehaps more opportunities, you are dependent on the other guests.

On the negative; several of the bathrooms are getting old and worn, some of the rooms are worn but this they wear better. There is a definite need for upgrading here and there

“Definitely a place to aspire to visit at least once”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

I visited this property on a tour of new area properties but did not stay overnight. I had high expectations and managed not to be disappointed. Although all cabins are beautiful and capture the Adirondack spirit without being too dark, they are quite different from each other so you should have some interest in which one you are going to take. Some have more lake views than others. Weathervane was an interesting one, although I would personally want the Boathouse. If you are going to spend all that money to be here, I think you might as well kick in some more and take that cabin. It might be a bit intimidating to come here if you are not into dinner parties and are not looking to be sociable although I understand that you can opt out of the dinner party. It might not be fun to be here if the weather is bad and there is no place outside to go and no place within 15 minutes drive to go to. You basically have your cabin, a living room in the main lodge and a small hangout room in a tavern on the property -- otherwise, you better like being outdoors. I have a feeling that all that solitude leads to a good amount of drinking -- I saw open bars every few hundred feet which is a good deal for those who like the all-inclusive nature of the property but a bit of a waste for me since I don't drink. I was sent off with a box lunch that was truly excellent and in the pantheon of box lunches -- home-made baked goodies and a hearty salmon salad sandwich on home-made bread among other things. And my car was filled up with petrol for the return trip. This is a place that goes the extra mile to impress -- this would be a very strong candidate for a family reunion (you can bring children if you take over the property) or a corporate retreat where you want to take over the property with its 13 or so cabins -- maximum number of guests on the property I think is about two dozen. It is a bit far from Burlington -- about 2 hours drive, but you can fly into Saranac airport about 15-20 minutes away via Boston on Cape Air as long as you don't mind an hour flying time in a Cessna. Or perhaps a private plane from anywhere.

“Get To The Point!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

My parents tell me of a time when hospitality was just that.
Hotels would go out of your way to make your stay extraordinary and anticipate you every need.
Well, I am happy to confirm that this is the motto of the Point.

If your considering this property, stop considering and proceed to make your reservation fast.
You will not be disappointed in the property or the staff.

You may be a little disappointed with things out of your (or the staff's control) - like the other guests!!!

I'm in my early 30s and everyone tends to be 50+ which I don't mind..... but other friends of mine would. It is also very couple dominated. With a couple hedge fund managers thrown in who think they are God because they aspire to be in the top 1% of wealth in this country (maybe if they weren't so cranky and had their priorities straight they would be!)
wink wink

For those who love nature and luxury this is your Shangri-la.
The food is divine, best fried chicken I ever had (staff made a picnic for us to take out on our private boat).
The bar is always open............
which is good, you might need to take a shot of some blue label before you
see your bill upon check -out!

Enjoy.
