Just returned from a night at the lodge and a day spent swimming at the waterpark. I booked it a few weeks ago as a mid-winter escape from our routine, and I was looking forward to a fun day/night at a family-friendly spot. We arrived at 10:30am on a Sunday morning knowing that our room probably wouldn't be ready (it wasn't even check-out time from the night before) but planning to just hit the waterpark and find our room later. Unfortunately, the first thing I was told was that I couldn't check-in until noon and that meant I also couldn't use the waterpark until noon (even though the park had been open since 9am). The desk clerk gave me a lame "sorry, that's hotel policy" when I complained that NO WHERE on my reservation or the website had I ever seen anything that stated I couldn't use the water park before noon on the day of check-in. That would have been nice to know when planning our departure time - we would have left home later and had a more relaxed morning! That started the visit and things seemed to never get much better from there.
The waterpark itself is fine - definitely in need of some TLC and a good scrub-down - and the kid's area ("tip-a-canoe") was perfect for my toddler, with 2 very small water slides, swings and some water spouts. The one thing I wish they did better was SIGNS!!! On the second-floor area there are multiple slides in various sizes, but none of them had height requirements posted on or near them, so the life-guard was constantly telling kids they were too big for one slide or too small for another. I'd rather the resort invest in some big, easy to read signs that the general public could figure out for themselves. It was very hard to tell my toddler that we couldn't go on the fun orange slide anymore because she was deemed too small for it.
Here are some tips for the the park in general:
1. The towels they provide are small and barely absorbent (think dish-towel). Bring your own. Or even better, if the the resort would lend out nice beach towels for a $5 return fee, not only would the towels be better quality but people would actually bring them back to the bins instead of leaving them all over the park.
2. Bring flip-flops. We didn't use the locker rooms or showers since we had a room upstairs but I did use the bathroom during the day. There was always a lot of water and hair on the floor (to be expected) but that grosses me out so I wish I had remembered mine.
3. Use sunblock. Yes, it is an indoor waterpark, but they used a special glass in the roof so you can catch some rays. I read this AFTER we had been at the park all day but since it was February we saw no signs of sunburn.
4. Buy candy in the gift shop. Weird, I know, but if you buy a bag of Sour Patch Kids at the little lunch grill counter, they'll cost you $3.50. If you turn around from the counter, walk about 20 feet and buy the same bag in the gift shop, they'll cost you $2.57.
As for the lodge itself, it was fine. Not great, not bad, just fine. The food choices left a lot to be desired (the breakfast menu was basically the same in the main lodge's restaurant as it was in Johnny Rocket's) but the room was clean and comfortable. Never found the tv remote however. We found in general there wasn't a huge emphasis on service (there never seemed to be anyone around when we needed a table for a meal), but everyone we dealt with was courteous and/or friendly.
Will we go back? Probably not.
