I'm in law school and my wife has a very busy job. We traveled home for Christmas and we knew before hand that every waking hour was going to be spent with my family or hers and that we wouldn't have any time to ourselves. So, a few days before we left for home I started looking online for a place that we could travel to over New Year's Eve when we returned home. During our honeymoon we spent a week in a really nice bed and breakfast / inn and wanted to try another place. I did my search and it seemed place after place was booked solid for New Year's. Then I came across the Bavarian Manor and I saw a notice saying that there had recently been a cancellation for New Year's Eve weekend.
I read about it, and the New Year's Eve weekend required a two night stay minimum. In addition there was a NYE celebration with a nice dinner and a cocktail hour beforehand. Champagne at midnight and a late night buffet afterwards. All of this for 75/person plus tax and gratuity. It sounded decent... and I did some quick research about the place beforehand like tripadvisor. I saw there were really good reviews and some pretty bad ones. I decided to take the gamble anyway. We booked the accommodations at 129 a night.
We arrived on the 31st at about 3 p.m. It looks quite nice from the outside... old, Victorian. The inside is somewhat tacky, but its a bed and breakfast with knick knacks everywhere... mostly German of course... I didn't expect modern or anything. We got our room key and went up to our room. This is where we looked at each other and said "What did we do???" Immediately you notice a severe slant in the floor. The room was tiny... as was the bathroom. As was the bed!! Now, I understand that I am very tall, I'm 6 foot 6 inches, but the bed was literally shorter than me. My wife and I sleep on a queen, and I've slept in a twin before. I don't know what size this one was. The WORST part is the door. It is the crappiest door I've ever seen... It is simply the strength of something like a bedroom door in a house or apartment... but an OLD one. You could hear EVERYTHING in the hallway. People talking at a normal volume sounded like they were in the room with you... people knocking on other doors made you think it was your own door! My wife and I have been married for 6 months, and wanted a romantic getaway... but its very hard to be... romantic... when you can hear other people's conversations in the hallway and if you can hear that, lord knows what they're hearing.
The water does smell bad... but I didn't really care once I realized why. You get used to it pretty quickly, I think.
We got dressed and went down to cocktail hour. The hors d'ourves were decent. The drinks are made with brand name liquor which was nice. Then we went in to dinner... which was pretty good. I had prime rib, my wife had rack of lamb. The food was pretty good as was the service.
We went to our room about 12:45... we were pretty tired from traveling that day. We went to bed about 2. There was a family with kids that apparently were in several rooms on our floor that made entirely too much noise the whole time. They would knock on the other rooms, yell to open the door. Had no respect for anyone else, and these were kids that were old enough to know better. We got up about 9 the next morning and went to breakfast.
Their menu for breakfast is on the internet and that's all it is. The pancakes were decent... french toast was better.
We just stayed in our room the whole day the 1st. We looked into different things in the area: FDR museum, a brewery, a few other things. Of course it being a holiday they were all closed. So, we just spent some time together in our little and crappy looking room. We ate dinner in the restaurant which was quite good. We got the Wienerschnitzel with Spaetzle and it was very good. The soda is extremely expensive. We didn't realize until the bill came that it was NOT free refills and each glass was 3 dollars!!! My wife and I shared the Wienerschnitzel (which there is a $4 charge for sharing a meal), she got her own salad (3.50) and we each had a dessert. The bill came to 55 dollars!!!! We were quite surprised when that bill came.
We had more problems with noise the second night. We got up the next morning, at breakfast and packed. Check out is at 11 a.m.. We went down at 10 a.m. to return the key to the front desk because if you don't return the key to the front desk when you leave there is a 25 dollar fee. So, I went to the desk... no one there. Rang the bell, no one came. Stood there for a good 10 minutes and not a soul in sight. So I left a message on the counter and left.
Bottom line: Not worth the money at all for the room accommodations. The food is rather good as long as you don't mind paying for it. If you don't mind hearing everything in the hall and don't mind people in the hall hearing everything going on in your room, don't mind paying entirely too much for a tiny room that throws you off balance just by walking around in it and don't mind everyone around knowing your business... then this is the place for you. Otherwise... just skip it. It is a beautiful area to visit and even stay in... but there were some other B&B's in the area... check them out before this place.
