“Excellent Stay”

This was our first time up to the Adirondacks and we heard about The Alpine Homestead through the rafting company we went rafting with.
It was exactly what we were looking: a quiet and comfortable place to stay while we explored the area.
While the house is lovely and very cozy, the Innkeepers Peggy and Barry made the stay extra special. They genuinely care about their guests and work extra hard to make you feel comfortable and at home. The breakfast and cookies that are prepared by hand were both amazing and just what we needed whether to start our day or as an afternoon snack on our hike.
I would absolutely recommend The Alpine Homestead. We hope to return in the near future to tackle a hike that got the best of us. We look forward to catching up with Peggy and Barry upon our return.

“Can't wait to go back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

One of the best B&B's we've ever stayed at; wonderful hosts who are fun & friendly without being pushy or intrusive; delicious (and copious) breakfast; fantastic dogs to give pats to; and of course a beautifully restored property that is both relaxing (esp. front porch and living room) and interesting (lots of maps, guidebooks, and other things to read). Meeting the owners was one of the best parts of our trip. We would like to adopt them as our new parents.

I would recommend this place specifically for visitors who are traveling solo, as a couple, or families with older kids (8 +). Not for those seeking a youth hostel atmosphere or a raucous night.

The Alpine Homestead would be an ideal place to stay for a fall weekend, as that is apparently their quietest season so far.

Breakfast is taken seriously here. Be on time for it and you will be rewarded with a 4 course experience that is healthy, delicious, and meticulously prepared.

Note: we had no Verizon or AT&T cell phone service here, nor almost anywhere in the Adirondack interior. Make all your arrangements before you travel.

RE: Dinner in Olmstedville.. dining options are limited in the immediate vicinity of the B&B, but there is a family-style place up the road and a very swanky restaurant right next door to the Alpine Homestead. Both are good, just depends how much you want to spend. We chose the nicer restaurant - the service and food were terrific, the only thing hard to digest was the bill.

“AMAZING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2010

We had never stayed at a B & B before. We now have exceedingly high expectations for future B & B we plan on staying at. Every thing about this place was awesome. Barry and Peggy are wonderful hosts. They do not make you feel like strangers. Barry and Peggy's breakfasts are to die for. We did not eat until dinner. I could of even skipped dinner. The home is a beautiful country look (wait until you see the kitchen) with knick-knacks everywhere. It's not cluttered but you can walk around the house for hours looking at everything. Our room was comfortable and we had our own bathroom. Don't expect to you use your cell phone b/c there is no service anywhere. It was kind of peaceful! They do have internet access, so you can bring a laptop. But honestly, who wants to? Leave it at home! I do have to give a kudos to the other guests that we met. They were the cherry on top of the whole experience.

“A perfect Adirondacks experience ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2010

We've just returned from the most amazing long weekend at the Alpine Homestead. This place is amazing. We were greeted with hot chocolate and cookies upon our arrival. In fact, we were served hot chocolate and homemade cookies every time we walked in the door - definitely a nice treat for the below-freezing temperatures, made all the more perfect by the wood stove in the living room. Barry and Peggy are just lovely people, and wonderfully attentive hosts.
The breakfasts were just amazing. Peggy is selling herself short by describing it as 3 courses - it's closer to 4 or 5, and everyone is welcome to seconds or thirds, as they desire. We did not eat lunch one single day, as we were completely stuffed from breakfast. Furthermore, Peggy is an amazing cook.
The inn is at most 10 or 15 minutes from Gore Mountain. There are several nice restaurant choices in North Creek, the small town around Gore. We did not venture out to Lake George, but it's only about 20 minutes away.
The inn itself looks exactly like the photos on the website. Everything is cozy and comforting. We stayed in the Tannery Room, and the king bed was extremely comfortable.
I highly recommend the Alpine Homestead to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend away. I've never felt so welcome while traveling - it truly felt like a home away from home.

“Hard to not stay an extra night!”

This is a wonderful place to stay. The house is large but comfortable in scale, and meticulously renovated. The decorating is interesting, not like a Victorian museum, or frilly, or really "adirondacky" - more like an accumulation of memories. Every room is comfortable and invites you to sit and relax.
Peggy serves a multicourse breakfast that would rival any upscale restaurant and makes sure you eat enough so that you don't run out of energy while hiking or skiing nearby.
They do have dogs, which are friendly and well behaved but if you or your children don't like dogs, its probably not the place to stay. They come with the package!
Olmsteadville is not exactly on the beaten path unless you are headed for Hornbeck Boats, but its really only a short drive to Gore Mountain. There is wifi which only seemed strong in the dining room (so if you are going to waste valuable relaxation time by answering emails, you have to do it in public) and cell phone reception is spotty. But better to turn off the electronics, curl up on the sofa and read a book!

  • Liked — Owners were very gracious and really wanted their guests to be comfortable.
  • Disliked — Was not told there would be a baby (who cried a lot one night) in the next room.
