“Wow- what a great b & b!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

Our first trip to New York: We stayed four nights at this lovely b & b to enjoy some High Peaks hiking. Peggy and Barry made our stay a warm and wonderful time. Breakfasts were amazing and huge. All baked goods were homemade and of the highest quality. Each of our four breakfasts was different and each was truly excellent.

After one hike, we came back soaking wet as it had rained heavily on us for our last mile. We asked for directions to a near laundromat, but were offered the use of their washer and dryer instead.

Our hosts were unfailingly helpful in providing directions and suggestions for dining options. They also included us in a large family gathering one evening - an unexpected pleasure.

Do note that the accomodations are up a steep staircase - so be prepared to carry up your luggage. Olmstedville is within 45 minutes of the High Peak trails - a lovely drive and part of the enjoyment.

We would rate this b & b as one of the best we have stayed in!

“High Peaks hiker discovers skier's "secret" lodging”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

Lodging options are scarce for hikers on the south side of the Adirondack High Peaks - add this to your short list! The Mix family offers their beautiful B&B, only 30 minutes from the important Tahawus trailheads. Comfy beds, wide verandahs overlooking lawns & gardens, generous living rooms w/ big screen TV. Rooms on the modest side, but you don't want to be inside anyway. Lavish custom breakfast at the time you request. Ask about a trail lunch. Fair warning: Olmsteadville dinner options somewhat limited, but more variety available at Pottersville and Schroon (SKROON) Lake.

“Excellent Stay”

This was our first time up to the Adirondacks and we heard about The Alpine Homestead through the rafting company we went rafting with.
It was exactly what we were looking: a quiet and comfortable place to stay while we explored the area.
While the house is lovely and very cozy, the Innkeepers Peggy and Barry made the stay extra special. They genuinely care about their guests and work extra hard to make you feel comfortable and at home. The breakfast and cookies that are prepared by hand were both amazing and just what we needed whether to start our day or as an afternoon snack on our hike.
I would absolutely recommend The Alpine Homestead. We hope to return in the near future to tackle a hike that got the best of us. We look forward to catching up with Peggy and Barry upon our return.

“Can't wait to go back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

One of the best B&B's we've ever stayed at; wonderful hosts who are fun & friendly without being pushy or intrusive; delicious (and copious) breakfast; fantastic dogs to give pats to; and of course a beautifully restored property that is both relaxing (esp. front porch and living room) and interesting (lots of maps, guidebooks, and other things to read). Meeting the owners was one of the best parts of our trip. We would like to adopt them as our new parents.

I would recommend this place specifically for visitors who are traveling solo, as a couple, or families with older kids (8 +). Not for those seeking a youth hostel atmosphere or a raucous night.

The Alpine Homestead would be an ideal place to stay for a fall weekend, as that is apparently their quietest season so far.

Breakfast is taken seriously here. Be on time for it and you will be rewarded with a 4 course experience that is healthy, delicious, and meticulously prepared.

Note: we had no Verizon or AT&T cell phone service here, nor almost anywhere in the Adirondack interior. Make all your arrangements before you travel.

RE: Dinner in Olmstedville.. dining options are limited in the immediate vicinity of the B&B, but there is a family-style place up the road and a very swanky restaurant right next door to the Alpine Homestead. Both are good, just depends how much you want to spend. We chose the nicer restaurant - the service and food were terrific, the only thing hard to digest was the bill.

“AMAZING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2010

We had never stayed at a B & B before. We now have exceedingly high expectations for future B & B we plan on staying at. Every thing about this place was awesome. Barry and Peggy are wonderful hosts. They do not make you feel like strangers. Barry and Peggy's breakfasts are to die for. We did not eat until dinner. I could of even skipped dinner. The home is a beautiful country look (wait until you see the kitchen) with knick-knacks everywhere. It's not cluttered but you can walk around the house for hours looking at everything. Our room was comfortable and we had our own bathroom. Don't expect to you use your cell phone b/c there is no service anywhere. It was kind of peaceful! They do have internet access, so you can bring a laptop. But honestly, who wants to? Leave it at home! I do have to give a kudos to the other guests that we met. They were the cherry on top of the whole experience.
