“30 years and counting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

My husband & I have been coming to the Fire Island Hotel on & off for 30 (we first fell in love there when it was still Flynn's Hotel). The staff is great (especially Patty), and the location (smack dab in the middle of the Island) can't be beat. You can walk through the Sunken Forest, grab a bite in Ocean Beach or take a water taxi to the Lighthouse (where their gift shop offers my book, "Ghostly Beacons."). Off season is quieter but still beautiful. And although the bedsheets are a little scratchy and the Hotel a bit rough around the edges (it is 100 years old, a former Coast Guard station), I look forward to our/my visit once a year to get away from it all & the Fire Island Hotel gives us just that.

Room Tip: Room 50 has an ocean view.

“Horrible Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

This hotel on Beautiful Fire Island is terrible. With a daily cost of $340. per night you would expect a room door that closes and locks without extensive exercise, a stall shower that leaks all over the floor and a room larger than the average bathroom. ; but not here.

The undersized double bed was against the wall so entrance aad egress by the inboard guest required climbing over the guest on the outboard side. This wasn't as big a problem as you might think. The matress was so hard and lumpy that there was little sleep especially when the guests in the adjoining rooms were serenading us with their snoring.

Next time a tent on the beach will be our home .

We are sorry for your inconvenience and/or poor experience. If we could build larger rooms we would, and offer larger beds than the full size beds we would, but we can't. Our facility is over 100 years old, it is a retired Coast Guard Station from 60 years ago. We try to offer a guest accomodations as best we can. Some poelpe understand this, while others expect the Ritz, and then would rather complain in a public forum such as this.

The rooms are not large and we know it, but we don't try to lead anyone one on differntly. I'm certain if you asked prior to your stay what your accomodation was like you would have known better what to expect.

Inasmuch as you had a noise issue, noise issues can be mitigated by either using in-room HVAC units (something no other hotel provides on Fire Island) which does drown out noise or open a window and listen to the waves and beach as we are that close to the ocean. You could even use your Ipod in our docking station and listen to your own music. So I am sorry for the noise issue. Lastly, if you asked or advised us of any issue at the time of your stay, we would have certainly looked to accomodate you in a differnt room if this room was not to your liking.

We would truly love to rebuild our facility to offer brand new units with larger accomodations, but as I said, the facility is over 100-years old. It has charm in and of itself for what it is and we are prevented to changing mcuh of it, but we try to keep a clean facility while offering good service as best we can.

Your comments are appreciated and we hope to improve our facility and service through those comments, both good and bad. Thank you.

“Good, bad, and the sad truth”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

My first time on on Fire Island, we spent most of the time at the house rented by a family member, but as part of an overlow after-wedding party, we booked two nights at the Fire Island Hotel. We read the TA critical reviews and were prepared for the worst. We stayed in cabin B. And, indeed, from the 60-grit sandpaper towels, to the bathroom mold, to a broken bedroom door, no hair dryer, the list of things to complain about is long. Still, all was not terrible. Guests seemed to be enjoying the pool and the poolside eatery. The young staff was friendly and helpful. We thought of our stay here as comparable to staying at a campground. But then there is the price. Simply outrageous. But the rates at nicer hotels on the island are even more outrageous. Because we spent little time at the hotel, we went with the "budget" rate. And if that is your situation, you will find the Fire Island hotel acceptible. Small, rooms, few amenities, a decent night's sleep.

But the sad truth about Fire Island is that if you do not own or rent a house on the island, a better shore vacation can be held elsewhere.

Thank you for your comment on our property. First, I want to say that after many years of trying to get permission to do any work to your cabin that you stayed, we are nearing getting such permit to renovate and hopefully by 2012, we will be able to complete it. The process is extraorniarily long and arduous due to a variety and overlay of municipal regulations. National, County, Town and Building Depts, among others. It is quite arduous as I said. In any event, Cabin A and Cabin B are marketed as "Shacks" at present until such time we are able to renovate. We are sorry for your poor experience, they (cabins A and B) really give us all the bad reviews of the 50 units under management. We can't wait to renovate them so we put an end to the poor reviews due to them. Once again, we appologize and hopefully in 2012, this will not be an issue any longer and we can then provide guests a better experience.

Thank you for your comment, we will look to improve where and when we can.

“We loved it and we'll be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Not only was the ferry ride over enjoyable and relaxing, but as soon as we got off the ferry there was a golf cart waiting with a bellhop to carry all our luggage for us and directed us to the hotel. He was very informative on the nightlife of the area and how to travel around the island. Then upon our arrival which was about a 5 minute relaxing walk to the hotel, our luggage was placed in the lobby until our room was ready which was ready at a reasonable time. We did not mind because we were able to use the hotel bar and pool...PLUS! the beach was right around the corner literally 50 yards away. All the rooms were newly decorated with ipod docks and flat screen tvs. This was one vacation that you can just call an escape from reality that you never want to leave.

“Good location, bad rooms.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

Stayed a weekend in August with two other couples and their kids, in total we had three rooms.

Please note that even though the official Tripadvisor entry shows this property to be in Ocean Beach, it is really in Ocean Bay Park. They are two different places on Fire Island with some significant differences.

The Pros: Location to the beach. Easy access, beach itself is great. Flat screen TV in room had limited channels but had a built in DVD player which was great to keep the kids busy during down time.

The Average: The pool was fine, the kids enjoyed it, it looked clean. The on site bar was ok as well. Hotel entrance and lobby were nice and the desk and hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Air Conditioners worked with no issues in all three rooms.

The Cons: The rooms are small and uncomfortable and they are not inexpensive. The beds are thin and hard, so are the pillows. Inexpensive linens, towels are small and thin. Bathrooms are cramped, our room had the sink and toilet in one room and the shower in a converted closet. The shower was worn out, had a leaky shower head, and mold all over the bottom sections of the shower stall. Of the three rooms in our party, two of them had no odor issue, but one had an unpleasant smell. There are general maintenance and repair issues such as our entrance door sagging to the point it was difficult to open and close.

Bottom line - If you know what you're getting into and don't mind the price for what you get, you can stay here. It's not a place we will personally return to. I think the hotel staff does it's best with what it has, but the rooms just don't cut it.
