“Old time charm on Long Island's gold coast”

I was returning to the North Shore of Long Island for a 25th High School reunion and really wanted to stay on the North Shore, near the town I grew up in. I was pleasantly surprised to find this beautiful historical Bed and Breakfast. The home, grounds, and neighborhood is in one of the most exclusive locations in the area. The rooms were very clean and I would highly recommend a stay at this truly unique and beautifully restored property. The Inn Keepers seemed to let us initiate conversation and I found them to be very friendly and professional. I did mention that an online reservation capability could helpful to them and their customers but everything was in order when we arrived and our messages back and forth seemed to get the job done...I am just not that casual...My parents traveled with us as well and we were all thrilled with our stay. We will be back when we are visiting the Island.

“amazing old house in secluded location”

My wife and I stayed here April 07. I have no idea how the owner could e construed as rude. He told a lot of stories when we were down at breakfast but I can't consider that intrusive. Certainly when we were up in our rooms and in the common spaces our time was our own. By the way there is a lot of common space in the second floor so you will have no trouble finding a place to read if you want. The area around Northport is interesting, but mainly a place to relax, not sightsee. If you do head this direction make sure to (try to) get a reservation at Maroni's, one of the best Italian restaurants in the NY metro.

“What a House!”

We spent just one night at the Carr B&B after spending a couple days in New York City. The change of pace was dramatic and the seclusion and quiet on Eaton's Neck was welcome.
As the previous review stated, the owner is a retired police officer. However, we didn't find him rude in any way upon arrival. (Admittedly, he was somewhat gruff on the phone.) He was very personable and spent a lot of time telling us about his rescue of that historic mansion from being bulldozed. His restoration of the building was without regard to cost and it shows. He has restored the entire house to as it was when it was new. It is magnificent. I can't say enough about the condition of the house.
His son had done the same type of restoration to another house on the isthmus, but that house tragically burned down. However, his son wrote a book on the history of Eaton's Neck (it's in your room), so the family is vested in preserving and promoting the history of the area. We were shown around the entire house, which was nice because the rented rooms are only on one side. While the house is large enough to have probably a dozen rooms, he only rents out 2 or 3.
The rooms are comfortably, simply yet elegantly, furnished.
Northport, which is just a few minutes away, was a quaint town to have dinner in. We ate at a mariner-type pub restaurant, where the food was good and the atmosphere was memorable. The general store is interesting too. Old trolley tracks run down the center of the streets in Northport, indicative of prosperous history.

  • Liked — the house itself
  • Disliked — it was a quiet house so our noise felt intrusive

“Far removed from civilization, great B&B but rude inn-keeper”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2006

Carr B&B was quite find on the north-central shore of Long Island. It's on Eaton's Neck, which is a little island off Long Island. The drive to the B&B was beautiful and the views of the Atlantic were breath-taking, to say the least.
The B&B is on an estate of sorts and you can see the ocean and some hills from a side.
Carr house is a huge one and the rooms were really nice. The bed and linens and furniture were top class and the breakfast was really good too.
There is a little town close by, where you can have great dinner and there is a beach really close by too, where you can spend hours looking at the waves and picking up the smoothest and roundest of rocks.
Only problem is that the inn-keeper - who is a retired cop - is an extremely rude person. And his wife is a little unusual for she repeats the same stories and asks the same questions whenever you talk to her.
Another totally odd thing I found in our room was that there was a painting of - of all the things - a grave yard!!
Also, both my husband and I had weird nightmares all night, which made us wonder if there was something wrong with the energy of the room and the house as a whole. It feels a little spooky, especially at night when all the lights are switched off - perhaps to save on electricity.
