We stayed 3 nights at Strogili and it was a highlight of our three weeks in Greece! Thank you, Popi and Mihaelis, for making our stay so comfortable, enjoyable and... magical.
Oia is beautiful beyond words, brilliant white Cycladic cave houses spilling over the cliffs, 300 meters above the sea below. We stayed in apartment #5 at Strogili (3rd level down from street) which was perfect for our family of four (parents plus 2 teenagers). Our apartment was a traditional 'cave house' built into the side of the cliff with a large terrace overlooking the sea and caldera. The views from our terrace were breathtaking, stunning, gorgeous... Each apartment has its own terrace but they are not exclusively 'private' since low walls separate the individual terraces and walkways (not at all a problem for our family but could be an issue for honeymooners). Our cave house consisted of two rooms including a separate bedroom with queen bed in the back, a front room with 2 twin beds and kitchenette, and a large bathroom. The apartment was very spacious and comfortable for 4 people, and was spotlessly clean, quiet and decorated in a charming Cycladic style.
Strogili has its own pool which is quite large for the area and beautiful! The pool is located about 30 meters or so from the apartments/studios and overlooks the sea with stunning views of the caldera. There is a small pool house behind the pool which serves water and coffee throughout the day/evening; there are plenty of umbrellas/sunbeds available and lovely flowers suround the patio - very nice!
Strogili is a small, family-run hotel. Mihaelis is married to Popi, and Popi along with her parents own the Strogili Houses. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay pleasant and enjoyable. We had pre-arranged with Popi a transfer from Athenios port to Strogili (25 euro total). Our ferry was over two hours late in arriving but Mihaelis was waiting for us at the port. During the drive to Oia, Mihaelis gave us all kinds of friendly advice about the island, where to go and eat, book rental cars, etc. Once we arrived at Strogili, all our luggage was (magically) transported to our apartment while we checked in. There was a bottle of Santorini wine on the table when we arrived too! Every morning, we were served a very nice breakfast on our terrace consisting of coffee, tea, juice, breads, cakes, fresh fruit, yogurt and honey, and poached eggs. We called the front office when ready for breakfast and within 10-15 minutes it was delivered to our terrace and served on the patio table!
Strogili is located off the main road as you first enter Oia, and is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Oia village center. The hotel offers FREE parking across the street. The location, however, may not be ideal for families with young children and strollers because you must walk about 100 meters along the main road (no sidewalks) before reaching the pedestrian-only walkway leading to the village center; the road is a little narrow at one spot with cars, motor bikes and trucks whizzing by! On the other hand, Strogili is away from all the bustle and noise of the village center. Our apartment, third level down, was VERY quiet at night (but not sure about the studios located on the top level by the street). I would recommend if possible booking one of the Traditional Houses (the 'cave houses' which sleep from 3 to 6 people) since they are all located on the third and fourth levels down from the street.
Some previous posts have complained about the availability of hot water for showers. You must flip on a switch to heat the water about 15 minutes before showering. There were four of us and we never had a problem but we don't generally take long, hot showers and our stay was in June. Could be an issue with larger families and/or in cooler months.
At 200 euro per night (for 4 people) in June, we felt Strogili was a very good value compared to some of the other nearby properties at double (or more!) the price. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back to Strogili.
