“Perfect! Parfait!”

We stopped at this hotel for two nights during our Normandy vacation. Our room was nicely decorated (pinks and silver) and the crib (traveling with 10 month old) was set-up for us. The hotel allowed us to use their refrigerator to put our son's yogurt and access it whenever we liked.

What made this place so spectacular is the restaurant. Amazing. We live in Paris and haven't had a gourmet meal like this one; we've searched. The staff were very accommodating. We sat outside in the garden to eat as it was just outside our room where our baby peacefully slept. As the night fell, we got cold and asked if they had a spare blanket we could cover up with as we didn't want to disturb our baby and go inside to get ours. They returned with the chef's and the waitress' sweaters. So kind, wonderful and in such a generous spirit. We dined the next night there and had the another yummy experience. We had the menu degustation with matching wines...superb. We'd go back there just to eat again!

The town has a lovely little market and is lovely to stroll around. Go there. You will be pleasantly pleased.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the internal garden which was lovely and quiet.

“What a find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

The hotel is in a very pretty Norman village up on a hill, with lots of one-way streets. Parking in the tree-lined square opposite. The building is old and traditional, and the service was very good. Our room was decorated in large bright pink chrysanthemums with pink velvet cushions. A surprise but very cheering! It was also very quiet. The hotel also sells delicious jams and other local produce that they make themselves. But the great treat of our visit was the restaurant. What a marvellous meal! I do not at all agree about it being over fussy. To be sure, it is presented with small spoonfuls of sauce and other trimmings, but on the square plates they use, each dish is worthy of a photograph! We waited to admire each element before beginning to eat - surely part of the pleasure of a good meal. Not only do the different courses look beautiful, but each part of the creation on your plate has its function in varying and enhancing the overall taste of the dish. I thought it the best meal I have eaten anywhere in years - and that includes London, Paris, New York, Luxembourg, Washington, New York, etc. Be sure to go and admire this young chef's work before he is lured away by some other big restaurant! To cap it all, the rapport qualité/prix is amazingly good. I certainly know of nowhere in the UK where you could get a 3-course meal of this quality for 28 euros (not including wine). A real 'find', and one we would even contemplate revisiting on a special weekend trip rather than as part of another journey. Not to be missed by anyone going through Normandy.

“Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

Nice clean comfortable rooms with excellent toiletries and copious amounts of hot water.nvery friendly and welcoming staff. Easy parking in a small square just outsidebthe hotel. Nice ambience throughout.

The meal was very tasty - the boudin noir is worth a special mention - if a little bit too "fancy" for some. Not a significant criticism - I would definitely go back. A lovely place to stay.

“OK but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

The rooms are clean, well-appointed and priced correctly, although the corridors and stairwell have a damp musty smell and the decor in these areas is a little dated. The only negative comment about our room was that the so-called spa shower was a bit unpredictable.

We only ate in the restaurant one night - the food is undoubtedly top-quality but somewhat over-pretentious, with too much happening on the plate (too many flavours, colours and textures). One reviewer mentions that they deserve a michelin star. However, such accolades are not awarded for food alone and they need to up their game with the service: in our case, ranging from small things like removing the wine glasses from the table if wine is not being taken, to forgetting my wife's desert even though we had to order deserts at the start of service (and to pre-empt any comments about language communication we live in France and speak the language fluently). Although my wife was brought a different desert to eat whilst waiting for them to prepare the desert she ordered this is not the correct approach. Had she eaten this desert she would not have had any room left to eat her own desert when it finally arrived. Thankfully - and unusually for France, where the customer is always wrong - an apology was forthcoming.

As regards the town of Mortagne au Perche, like many other small French provincial towns in the middle of Summer (and probably during most of the year), the place becomes a ghost town during the evenings - as the name of the town unintendedly suggests the place is pretty dead ("mort").

As such Le Tribunal is very much an oasis in the Mortgane desert with very few (if any) other dining options in the town.

“Classic: Great value for money”

Stayed one night on spec on our way to Vendee. What a charming village and hotel. Out of season so quiet in village but hotel busyish. Lots of character; stayed in a large ground floor room, basic but all as needed. Parking in small square outside but could be a problem when busier. Evening meal was a real surprise re quality, presentation and price. Current food style with lots of dabs, smears etc but taste combinations spot on and quality of produce first rate. Good and reasonable priced wine list.
