“Interesting chateau in the country.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2007

I'd agree with all the good reviews here but I do have a couple of problems. Not deal-breakers, but just problems.
1. Probably because of the time of year, the place had a lot of lazy big black flies about. I could usually shoo most of them out an open window. The problem was apparently caused by the mgt leaving a couple of windows open to air the room out after dailing cleaning.
2. The room was *spotlessly* cleaned every day EXCEPT up in one corner was a spider web with about 12 big black flies in it. Pretty ugly, and could have been taken care of with a long broom or vacuum.
3. They asked if we wanted cheese and ham with breakfast (which was very good). When we checked out, there was a DAILY supplement of about $20 per day for this which we hadn't understood at all. I just let it go, but someone on a budget would be wounded by that.
Otherwise, the people were nice, the grounds were lovely, the location great, and the room was clean--even clean sheets daily.
I'd go there again, but not accept the kind offer of the cheese/ham. You will find eating in the Bayeaux area that you are cheesed out in a few days anyway..

  • Liked — An authentic 17th century French Chateau with a history.
  • Disliked — The staff only spoke French - but that's common for Normandy

“Super! A memorable and unique stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2007

Having read some of the other reviews, we were a little hesitant, but when we got there the experience was simply stunning - a fabulous place, superb grounds. As the hotel was extremely quiet, we were given an upgrade on arrival - and stayed in a fabulous room at a truly astonishing price. The staff were charming, the bed gave a fantatic night's sleep and there was oodles of hot water for baths/showers etc. The decor and collections are quirky but genuine and feel 'right' in this location - however, if I'd had small children with me , I wouldn't have known a moments piece!! It is not a perfect, pristine, faultless place - there are patches and marks here and there - but if you want that kind of thing go to a motel chain, and enjoy the perfectly plastered beige walls. This is a 200 year old chateau in France, with the grounds, decor, quirkiness and space you'd hope for. At the price I paid, I felt like I'd been given a present.

“Romantic getaway in the country”

My husband and I stayed here for two nights. The service/staff is very personal and so willing to please. Keep in mind it is old, over 200yrs old; which made it even more adventerous for us. We had the jr. suite, no complaints. Very clean. Maybe replace the bedspread? The breakfast was brought to our room at the time we requested...... very fresh! very good!
Good english spoken for those who need it, we are from the U.S. and we were relieved to hear this.... we were prepared otherwise.

I highly recommend this establishment. It is clean and well kept. It is a small distance from the Bayeux area. ...perfect location.

They should post a sign to give you an idea you are approaching the property.
All in all....thumbs up to the Chateau De Goville, I will be returning. ;)

This is the 5th time we stayed at Chateau de Goville , though it has been about 5 years since the last time( as they have been full). It did not disappoint. The owners are great. The place has been in his family for years and he has many family collections out. The decor is truly French and the grounds are as beautiful as the rooms. Many famous people have stayed here but we have been treated as good as any of them each visit. We first went when our child was 4 and loved the owners dogs. Now only one dog is still there, and our child went to Spain with friends, but that was the only thing that was missing.
The breakfast in the rooms is as good as it was 10 years ago. The owners speak a little English but are always helpful .I was a little taken back by another reviewer and almost didn't call for a room but once again I am so glad we did. A Fantastic place to stay. When we travel from the US to visit Normandy we will always stay here if possible.
Viva Chateau de Goville.

“Changing times??”

We stayed at the Chateau de Goville in Dec 2005. During our stay we had heavy snowfall, which although bad news for drivers made our whole experience even more magical. Its true that this place certainly isn't your standard hotel, but we found the beds excellent, and unlike other reviews found the linen and upholstery throughout the house to be of very high quality. The house appeared to be very clean, but there are so many collections throughout that some people may find it a bit cluttered or busy. We found it enchanting, and the owner took us on a tour of the house making it even more interesting. Much of the furniture and collections have always been part of the house which has been in his family over 200yrs. They dont appear to do much restauration, there were only a few tables and these are for the hotel guests only. We found the food nice, nothing too fancy but nice and reasonably priced, we did have the alternative of going the 10 Kilometers to Bayeux, but we preferred to stay infront of the log fire! On all a charming experience, more recommended if you are there to stay to apreciate the house as much as the local area. Its a unique hotel experience.
