“VERY OVERPRICED, very shabby, goodish food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

A possible reason to visit this place is the restaurant: the food was indeed good. However it was not cheap and the pricey 12 euro (for example) supplement on a 38 euro 'formule' for the simple rack of lamb seems totally unjustified. The service was attentive if a little slow. The tables all had old used candles and no flowers, the cutlery had seen better days but the table linen was clean. The atmosphere in the converted mill dining room was dark. This is a family operation, and it shows. The wine list is exploitative: most items are priced between 100 and 4000!! euros a bottle and there were just three very mediocre items under 30 euros. Breakfast was fine: croissant, coffee and fruit.

The location of the mill is picture perfect. The pool is heated to a good 27C but the pool furniture was old, tired and needs to be replaced. The pool itself also shows wear and tear but was clean. The smelly grey frayed pool towels need to be thrown away and replaced. The mill garden had some dying flowers but the lawns had been mown. The canoes for kids exist but its jetty had collapsed into the river.

The entry to the mill hotel smells stale and musty but the first floor rooms smelt ok once the windows were thrown open. Nearly all the staff smoke and are not fully diligent about doing so outside: I saw the patron smoking in the kitchen – unacceptable these days. Our room had had a makeover a few years ago: it was clean, tidy, reasonably appointed but tired and shabby. For instance the window paintwork was decaying, the bathrrom grouting was grey and had obvious gaps. The TV was old. The stair carpets are frayed. There is no carpet underlay in the bedroom. We were able to get WiFi (just) in the bedroom.

The staff (family) want to help. They printed out local walks for us on their computer, wished to engage and at breakfast supplied grapefruit when asked. English is spoken and there is hope for the future in that one of the sons is to marry a young lady with a hotel management qualification.

The chateau itself is odd – a relic. A short walk around inside and out shows it trapped in a timewarp needing a huge investment to bring it up to modern levels to justify the room pricing. The lawns were mowed but the gardens were in decay. The tennis court hadnt been swept, ts fencing had holes but it could have been used. The chateau has riding stables which seem to be popular locally. We were delighted not to be lodged at the chateau but down the hill. To describe this as a quality chateau experience is simply wrong. Even the reception had a notice to go down to the mill to book in.

We ourselves would not return nor recommend it to others till this place had received the renewal investment it needs despite the good food. The pricing is sinply not warranted neither for the rooms, nor the meal nor the wine. Do not be fooled by the slick website. Our bill for two nights half board was 600 euros!

“Lovely chateau/mill hotel in remote location with good restaurant.”

We stayed 3 nights in one of the rooms separated from the mill at the bottom of the hill. Room very large and as a previous review describes 'shabby elegant'. Did smell slightly damp however and no tea making facilities in room. Lovely views of the gardens from the window.

The mill itself is a gorgeous building with stream flowing through the gardens to sluice gates beside the mill. The pool is also lovely and is heated. Remote location with plently of pretty walks to do if the weather is fine. Not a massive amount to do when the weather is wet however (we visited Nogent but is pretty much closed on Mondays). Hotel staff helpful and spoke decent English. The Chateau is up a fairly steep hill and looked very impressive from the outside and could be seen from the main road leading towards the village.

We ate twice in the hotel restaurant which is lovely as well but a little pricey (€38 pp for 4 courses for the standard menu). Wine menu is huge but we struggled to find anything in our meagre range, in the end paid €28 for a nice bottle. Note you're charged extra for coffee after the meal. The standard menu only has a small number of options for each course but can pay extra for more variety. There aren't a great deal of other restaurant options in the area, the few we found within a sensible driving distance were closed on Mondays or closed completely during August.

“Wonderful hospitality in a beautiful place”

We had an inpromptu two days here at the start of our trip through France into Spain, due to the demise of our car. After a great week in the mountains we decided to end our holiday back at Villeray as we loved it so much. The place is gorgous and we were made to feel so welcome. Our chidren loved the pool, the table tennis table and most of all they loved walking through the woods and making friends with the a local dog who followed us home. An evening stroll with the gorgous "Tigger" is also not to be missed. Refreshingly unstuffy and we very much hope to visit again.

“Chic Chateau”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2010

Not luxurious but so much style. Absolute fabulous location with far reaching views over open countryside. We opted for superior room which frankly was not necessary as we had two bedrooms.Breakfast is served in The Moulin Restaurant at bottom of hill which is a pleasant stroll with excellent choice. We eat their in evening and although expensive is a must.
After dinner Tigger insisted on chaperoning us back to the Chateau. He resembles the creature that piloted the space ship in Star Wars but larger!!!

Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Shabby chic and elegant. We loved it. I am not going to say too much as I want it to remain a special secret....!

Amazing food and great interiors. Not too polished, but just extremely chic and authentic.

We will be going back very soon.
