“Nice place and people, shame about the service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2011 via mobile

Stayed here a week. Good location , pretty place but recently fashionable sisal everywhere now looks a bit naff and scruffy. New management and staff strike one as willing and untrained, with management a bit too laissez faire leaving restaurant staff unsupported. Food good though overpriced some good value wines but others way overpriced. On balance a nice stay if you are prepared to work around the problems and very occasionally chaotic mealtimes.

“Nice hotel in a nice town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2011

We travelled as a group of four, in two rooms. Both rooms were pleasantly spacious and the beds were very comfortable. I agree with previous reviewers about the carpeting being rough, but that isn't a major problem. The corridors are also dark with the lighting that turns on as you walk along them, but I didn't spend much time in the corridors! This isn't a five star hotel, but a comfortable place to stay as part of a journey. But one of the rooms was overlooking the main square and there were noise issues on one of the nights we were there.

The public areas are rather dark and small, which would be more of an issue if you are staying there during the winter months. In the summer, you are unlikely to use them as it is much nicer to go and sit in a cafe on the square immediately outside the hotel.

The restaurant gets a lot of criticism from other reviewers. We didn't have any problems, but certainly the French seem to take more time over meals than we Brits or the Americans do. I think a normal 3 course meal in France would last at least 2 hours and you need to be prepared for that. We found the service acceptable on that basis. The food was very tasty and nicely presented.

Beaulieu itself is a lovely town - take time to wander around and see it all.

Room Tip: Avoid room overlooking the square on a weekend

“A good place to be 'lost in France'.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 April 2011

The relaxed atmosphere created by the owner and his staff complement the peaceful ambience of the surrounding area. The restaurant's excellent menu of local dishes and extensive wine list was enjoyed fully during our stay. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and intend to return there later this year.

“Fair hotel - just don't eat in the restaurant”

The rooms are very nice although no aircon so very warm in summer. We didn't want a room overlooking the square as we thought it may be too noisy so we opted for one at the back but unfortunately we quickly realised there was a large fan from the kitchens on for the majority of the time and this was fairly loud. The rooms were nicely decorated although the matting carpet hurt my feet after a while. The bed was extremely comfortable. The owner had suggested having dinner in the restaurant which we agreed to, we made no booking time so headed down there around 7.30pm. We were seated in the garden area which was already very busy. I quickly realised that no-one was actually eating anything yet and it looked like everyone had arrived at the same time for dinner. Anyway the service was very poor, in my opinion there were not enough staff. Dinner took so long we left our dessert as we were so tired, we finished our main around 10.30pm. I complained the morning after and was told they were short staffed and that everyone had wanted to eat at the same time the previous evening. I empathise with them on this point but if they don't have the staff they shouldn't really allow so many people in for dinner all at the same time. In addition, they clearly need a better system to manage their restaurant sittings. It's a real shame. We left the next day although we had planned to stay another night.

“Decent hotel, shame about the restaurant.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

Housed in a charming old building, this hotel is decorated with originality, but the public areas are dark and depressing. We liked our room, which had a bathroom, a separate toilet, and a small curtained-off passage connecting them. The bathroom was ultra-modern and particularly striking. Everything looked clean, new and modern. The two disappointments were the corridors, which housed a weird smell, and the restaurant. The restaurant is spacious, comfortable, expensively furnished and elegant, with menus and wine list to match. It has high ambitions, which it simply did not reach. Service was unbelievably slow and downright poor. The food was mediocre, certainly not living up to the promise of the menu. When we went in August 2010, the restaurant had just acquired a new chef (should that be “had just lost its chef”?) and, we later learned that it recently lost a key member of restaurant staff. Hopefully it will regain the quality level it aspires to. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, but our bill was wrong when we checked out (it was corrected without any difficulty). The hotel is well placed in the centre of town (on a square, but not noisy); there was free wifi and free parking.
