This former Abbey was a Rothschild private residence that has been converted to a extraordinary hotel. Upon arrival, even before seeing our room, we immediately asked to stay an extra night, and they graciously extended our stay, despite the fact that we arrived on foot and stood before them in grubby hiking clothes. We cannot imagine a better hotel- easily the equivalent of the Relais y Chateau properties we've stayed at. Beautiful property and rooms, lovely restaurant. Be sure to order the Bar en croute de sel (sea bass in salt crust) if there are two of you. BTW, requested dress for the restaurant is jacket and tie, although they seated people without. I had packed jacket and tie in my backpack, and my love had packed a wonderful dress, so all was well. It's surrounded by forests. There is a pool, fishing, boating and I guess you can chopper in if you want (we watched two couples arrive in private helicopter, eat lunch and fly away). For the record, it's 40 minutes on foot along a twisting forest road to Cernay. We cannot wait for an opportunity to return.
