Villa Louise was a disappointment. Beaune and Burgundy were not!
Aloxe-Corton is a small village that is a 10 minute drive from Beaune. We were looking for a mid-priced property and selected Villa Louise based on the TripAdvisor reviews we had seen.
Upon arriving, we found the parking lot to be a tight fit... entry is narrow (with evidence of others who had decided to leave some car paint on building walls!) and the parking lot itself is cramped.
The Villa is essentially a country inn that at one time would have been wonderful, but today is in need of some refurbishment. The common areas are fine, but the room that was offered, and we had to take, had seen better days. Yes, it did have a large bathroom, fluffy towels and a flat screen TV... but the carpet was worn, the mattress was 'tired', and since they'd left the windows open, the room was full of fruit flies etc - perhaps it was the time of year... but there were also spider webs in the corners etc.
What was really frustrating was that this wasn't the garden view room we had booked. We were told that the original guests who had booked this room, and who had arrived before us, decided they didn't want this room and the hotel gave them our room --- and we were stuck with this room that looked out over the entrance to the parking lot. Not happy. We asked to be moved but there were no other rooms available. We complained about the cleanliness and although they weren't happy to learn about our displeasure, they did act on our request and the room was somewhat cleaner over the rest of our stay. But, one doesn't spend their vacation in their hotel room so we pressed on.... We spent the next 90 minutes cleaning and ridding the room of unwanted 'guests'.
Villa Louise also has a large vineyard and produces their own wine. They also have a very large garden area in the rear of the property with tables where guests are welcome to sit, absorb the ambience of the countryside (which is beautiful!), and try some of the wine (which we thought was also very good).
Breakfast is served in the common area. We ate there one morning and discovered that it includes all sorts of things - even a stewed pear (which was very good!). We decided we each also wanted a boiled egg which was no problem... until we checked out, when we found that anything not in the standard breakfast menu was an added cost - not impressive when guests were already being charged 15 Euros pp. Also, be warned, we noted in a previous review that you need to tell them if you will NOT be taking breakfast - if this slips your mind, and you don't take breakfast - they may still charge you.
We really enjoyed Beaune and the Burgundy region... but as for Villa Louise, it's just unfortunate that for a place with so much potential, our memories will be overshadowed by the poor state of the room we had (others may be better) and the 'nickel and dime' extra breakfast charge.
