“the perfect end to our holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

We got to the hotel and found that it wasn't very crowded and we couldn't work out why because the staff were very helpful and it was a very nice hotel.

We were shown to two very spacious rooms with air conditioning and balconys overlooking a big infinity pool. the weather was great and we all enjoyed a dip in the pool to cool off before sunbathing with cool drinks.

We ate our dinner in a cosy room on the first night because it was chilly, the meal was average, but not overpriced. On the second night we ate outside where we sat and enjoyed the view of the mountains and the river.

The week before had not been great, with it being rainy, but this hotel made it up and we go home as happy holiday makers!

  • Liked — the good atmosphere and big pool
  • Disliked — the fact that not many people knew about it

“Comfortable but difficult to find...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2007

We consulted Tripadvisor about this hotel and booked on the basis of the feedback, which was very positive. In particular, we printed a copy of the useful map, showing the location of the hotel as the directions on the hotel website are not very comprehensive. The Tripadvisor map showed the hotel as being located near La Caneda, to the north of Vitrac.
We arrived very tired on the evening of 7th August to find that the hotel was nowhere near where the map indicated ! Luckily we found someone in the La Caneda area, which is sparsely populated, who knew the hotel and was able to direct us. In the event, we still needed directions from another kind lady in Montfort before we found it. We did not see a single sign to the hotel on the way !
We strongly suggest that Tripadvisor update their directions...
As far as the hotel is concerned, it is quite spread out and we were a long way from the Reception and the dining/breakfast area. As we are fairly fit, this was not a problem but it might be awkward for elderly people as there are also a lot of stairs.
The hotel is in a very picturesque location with views towards the river. Unfortunately, there was thick mist every morning which only lifted as we were about to set out for the day, so we did not benefit from the views at breakfasts, which were taken inside. It was also cool in the evenings, so we regrettably were not able to enjoy the terrace, which looked romantic.
The hotel seems very modern and a bit characterless, although we were assured that parts of it were quite old. The room was certainly comfortable but, frankly, we could have been anywhere.
The food was top quality 'nouvelle cuisine' and quite expensive, but certainly worth it at least once during your visit if you do not normally get the opportunity to taste such fare.
The staff were very pleasant but a bit rushed, which is not surprising at peak season.
We were not able to use any of the facilities which included golf and a nice looking pool.
The hotel is very well located for visits to castles etc in the 'golden triangle' in the Dordogne.
In conclusion, we would certainly recommend it for a first visit but, if we were to return to the area we would look for somewhere with more character.

  • Liked — Clean, modern and comfortable, with adequate space
  • Disliked — Lack of character and long way from Reception etc

“Sublime food and service”

We read the reviews of the property on trip advisor and looked forward to our stay. We arrived about 8:30pm tired and hungry after a long trip and were warmly welcomed and allowed to go straight into the dining room. The meal and service were the best we have ever had and having decided to give the choice of wine to the Sommelier we were very happy with his choice. We spent three very relaxing days and nights and although we don't play golf we heard how good the course was. The villa garden room was very clean and well furnished in the newer part. Only minor complaint was the hairdryer was hopeless. Staff helped suggest placed to visit and were always courteous. Easy day trips to all the major sights or just a great place to laze around the pool and read a book.

  • Liked — Food and service
  • Disliked — Hairdryer

“A Hidden Gem”

I don't know how this hotel only received a 3 star rating, but someone didn't visit it. We were there at end of May, 2007 for 3 nights (Room 8), in the "low end" price range. It has a golf course, but we went solely for the accomodations, which we picked based upon the online information
We had a wonderful surprise. It is an elegant chateau overlooking a valley, with a great infinity pool (too cool to use, but I was alone in a beach chair reading, with a view of the valley and didn't want to leave). Our room had a balcony with a great view where we sat and ate lunch with cheese, wine, etc. that we bought at a weekly market in one of the local towns (Sarlat). Couldn't have been nicer- very large room, big beautiful bathroom (fine shower and bathtub) with bathrobes, nightly turndown service, nice closet, and firm bed with very fine linens. The dining room is what you'd expect for a fine french restaurant, and the the prix fixe dinner was pricey for the area, but no more than Paris (and the best food in the area). English speaking maitre d' was very helpful, and formal or friendly depending on whether you wanted to talk to him or be left alone. The workout building needs a key from the front desk ( not a short walk), and lacks treadmills or t.v.s, but was otherwise adequate. This is a 4 star hotel which if I expected to be back in the area in the next couple of years, I would not be sharing with this review .
Also, there is a fine canoeing/kayaking (we had separate kayaks to preserve our marriage) company a mile away that allows you to go down downstream on the Dordogne (healthy current- you don't need to paddle if you want to be lazy) for a scenic 2 hour trip, at the end of which they drive you back to your car. We didn't make reservations ahead of time in the states to see the prehistoric caves in the area (mistake), but had a wonderful time anyway- I mapped the area on "michelin.com " before we left and it helped alot, since Route #'s signage is not nearly as frequent or large as in the states.

“excellent restaurant, good hotel”

We spent two nights at this hotel with a Bike Riders Tours group. The restaurant, in particular, was outstanding. We loved the evening when we had dinner alone (the rest of the group went to Sarlat or Domme), and we watched hot air balloons across the valley while having our champagne and appetizers.

The hotel has a fabulous view over the Dordogne valley, and great pool and what looked to be a good golf course (although I don't play so can't really judge). Be aware, however, many of the rooms are very modern (the "chateau feel" just isn't there in this place). That said, it really was an excellent stay.
