I don't know how this hotel only received a 3 star rating, but someone didn't visit it. We were there at end of May, 2007 for 3 nights (Room 8), in the "low end" price range. It has a golf course, but we went solely for the accomodations, which we picked based upon the online information
We had a wonderful surprise. It is an elegant chateau overlooking a valley, with a great infinity pool (too cool to use, but I was alone in a beach chair reading, with a view of the valley and didn't want to leave). Our room had a balcony with a great view where we sat and ate lunch with cheese, wine, etc. that we bought at a weekly market in one of the local towns (Sarlat). Couldn't have been nicer- very large room, big beautiful bathroom (fine shower and bathtub) with bathrobes, nightly turndown service, nice closet, and firm bed with very fine linens. The dining room is what you'd expect for a fine french restaurant, and the the prix fixe dinner was pricey for the area, but no more than Paris (and the best food in the area). English speaking maitre d' was very helpful, and formal or friendly depending on whether you wanted to talk to him or be left alone. The workout building needs a key from the front desk ( not a short walk), and lacks treadmills or t.v.s, but was otherwise adequate. This is a 4 star hotel which if I expected to be back in the area in the next couple of years, I would not be sharing with this review .
Also, there is a fine canoeing/kayaking (we had separate kayaks to preserve our marriage) company a mile away that allows you to go down downstream on the Dordogne (healthy current- you don't need to paddle if you want to be lazy) for a scenic 2 hour trip, at the end of which they drive you back to your car. We didn't make reservations ahead of time in the states to see the prehistoric caves in the area (mistake), but had a wonderful time anyway- I mapped the area on "michelin.com " before we left and it helped alot, since Route #'s signage is not nearly as frequent or large as in the states.
