“THE place to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2012

Pongwe beach Hotel is set on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The hotel was a perfect retreat after 5 nights on safari.

Location
Pongwe is around an hours drive from stone town. Set in a secluded bay the hotel offers the perfect place to relax. Pongwe is not the place to go if you are looking for activities to do outside of the hotel.

Rooms
We were given Val's room which is the honeymoon suite. The rooms are fairly basic at Pongwe. They are clean and functional but offer fantastic views of the white sands and dream like blue shades of the Indian Ocean.

Staff
The staff at pongwe were extremely friendly and couldn't be more helpful.

Food
Perfect! We both really enjoyed every meal at Pongwe. We stayed on a half board basis with breakfast and dinner included.
Breakfast was a perfect way to start the day. We had lunch every day we roughly cost around 10-15 dollars each. We had a choice from around 5 different meals and always found something we loved.
Dinner was a set menu, consisting of 3 courses. Again we enjoyed every meal.
A must do is the sea food platter on the beach, 40 dollars each for all the seafood you could ever eat! Lobster, crab, slipper lobster, prawns and squid.

Activities
Pongwe is not the place to come if you intend to get out and see zanzibar. Due to it's seclusion most activities are fairly expensive.

Overall
we had a great time. A perfect hotel to relax in, set on the most beautiful beach. We would return but maybe for 4 nights next time.
We feel Pongwe is perfect to combine with a Stone Town hotel stay.

Really, i've been not only at this hotel and others have more stars. But this is the most beautiful and enjoying.

The beach is white, ocean is clear and transparent. Stuff is very very helpful and do the best to help you enjoy your visit. No any hustlers on the beach (thanks to stuff!).

But you must know before go there:
1. There is no air conditioning in the rooms. It is not the problem, wind from the ocean can cool your room enough.
2. All water is salty. Less salty than in ocean, but even in bathroom you will have salt water.
May be for somebody it is a problem, so double check and do not write bad reviews - you are warned :)

Room Tip: Get the room with ocean view - you will be pleased )

We came here after our Kili climb and safari. Fantastic! Beach beautiful, food excellent, couldn't fault the staff, they were friendly and helpful. The room was better than expected, I didn't mind the brackish water for showering or the bats roosting in the roof void, it all added to a wonderful experience

“Great way to end a safari”

We had the pleasure of enjoying the great hospitality and setting at Pongwe Beach Hotel. The setting is magical, the accomodation perfectly beachy, no A/C but plenty of fans. Staff was very accomodating and friendly and thankfully not pawing for tips. Food was very good to great, some of the seafood was overcooked.

For $15 can go out snorkeling off the beach for two hours of great viewing with Captain Ali (could be Martin Lawrence's twin).

Two things to be aware of are, the hotel is a long way from everything and it cost about $100 (return) to get to Stone Town.

“Charming and beautiful”

We stayed at this place as a (warm!) treat after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and it lived up to all expectations. Granted, we had sourced our own transport through "Zanzibar car hire" which meant that we could venture out for little trips at our leisure, though we were also happy to spend hours quietly reading on the beach or terrace loungers. We had the breakfast-only deal and were happy to pay the price for the additional meals we had at pongwe- they were always delicious. The evening cocktail hour prior to dinner was a perfect way to watch the sunset. The rooms were spacious, clean, and well stocked and the beds were very comfortable. Service was always exceptional and the staff were all lovely. This place does not pretend to be a luxury western cookie-cutter hotel and it does not need to be- its charm and beauty come from being uniquely "Zanzibarian".
