“everything we hoped it would be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We stayed as a couple at Migrante over Christmas 2011.

We loved it. Woken by the sounds of breakfast being laid out below us
at around 8.00 and serenaded by the sadly late Cessaria Evoria through early evenings and siestas.

It is a guest house – but a very stylish one that feels like a boutique hotel.
The beautiful and charming owners live there as a family and were happy to help us whenever we needed it. So the feel is that you are a lucky house guest in some one else’s fabulous place. It is very relaxed.

In some ways Migrante undersells itself. The bar is the best in Sal Rei for sure.
For both drinks and ambience (definitely good caiparinhas using the local cane spirit). They also cook for you on request and that was the best restaurant experience we had in 10 days – sitting in the courtyard under a Christmas-decorated palm tree.

We weren’t expecting much from the food in Boa Vista but were, overall, pleasantly surprised. The local wine from Fogo island is exceptional: high alcohol yet still balanced whites and really dense red wines that are classy - the Italian influence it seems.

The no-nonsense Te Manche was our local from day one – watch the sun set – get mildly approached by dodgy souvenir sellers – watch the package tourists unpack from a dangerous-looking island tour boat – see fish chucked onto the quay from a tiny fishing boat with what looks like enough skipjacks to feed the town..

Wakan bar is also worth a visit. Like a traffic island ship, it is nicer to be in than to look at, and has a tree growing through it. No, really!

Most days we headed up towards Estoril beach, a short walk, where there are several beach clubs with loungers, bar, and restaurant.
Very chilled out and the reason to visit Boa Vista (unless you are a kite-surfer, in
which case you will already know). Club Bahia has the best food of the beach places and a Euro-vibe that we liked.

Downsides: in Migrante the sound travels, part of the ambience for us, and the housey feel. Dogs – lots of strays who will buddy up with you on the beach in a non-intrusive way but also howl at the moon which makes for atmospheric nights. We didn’t notice any mosquitoes but flies were a feature of most mealtimes, they leave you alone after that. The prices are not much different from Europe.

Hopefully this review gives an impression of Boa Vista as a still rough and original place to visit with much to recommend it for the non-package tourist.
Migrante guest house is a gem..

“cozy stylish place for individual travellers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

We chose the Migrante as we don't like huge all inclusive resorts and had the opportunity to rent their appartment, which is situated around the corner from the guesthouse, giving on the main square of town, but offers breakfast at the guesthouse. The appartment is big and great for a family with two separate bedrooms (great beds) and two bathrooms and a washer (no dryer however and the climate is somehow humid, so it takes some time to dry clothes). There was no lift to the 4th floor appartment, but it's easily doable. A small supermarket is right at the corner and there are several bakeries to buy fresh bread as well as the comunal market for fresh fruit just along the town square. Sidewise from the terrasse of the appartment you can spot the fishmarket (but fortunately not smell it) where the fisherman bring their catch and the women sell it, so fresh fish is always available. If with all the fresh food choices you dont feel for cooking yourself, there are some very good restaurants nearby. We enjoyed very much the Blue Marlin (absolutely book ahead, as even guests from the all inclusive come here for dinner) and the blue barrack Te Mache at the pier. Also the Lunar Grill is nice, but we have been the only guests there and they had to get and buy everything we ordered first. The terrasse of the appartment had a beautiful view over the near beaches and the town and the square below. It was relaxed and calm in this small town (just not on weekends with a disco sound that made the whole building vibrate).
The guesthouse where we had a good breakfast daily was charmaing - we however did not see the rooms. it seemed rather busy for off season. This is probably the best solution for individual travellers and the location in the middle of the town is good. The local people are very friendly and welcoming and helpful if you are looking for something.
We made a one-day tour arrange by the guesthouse with their car to see also the rest of the small island. The tour was nice but the driver however was not very professional - but he was a driver then, not a guide. He could not explain anything, fortunately we brought our island tour description from lonely planet. He also was having the lunch he brought with him while driving and then invited himself to our table at lunch and ordered and did not even consider a meager thank you after this. On our way back to town he took up a hitchhiker without even asking for our consent - something we have never experienced so far in all the countries we visited.

“Wonderful guesthouse in Boa Vista”

We spent 5 days in this very beautiful guesthouse 2 weeks ago, is an old colonial house, completely renovated and very well decorated. Our room had a sea view. The house is not in front of the beach, but it is only 50 meters. The beach of Estoril is only minutes away on foot. For the evening however is perfectly located in the historic part of town and you can quickly reach all the local restaurants and the main square. Great breakfast buffet, friendly staff and Chris is always available to offer advice on excursions and activities. Perfect place for those who travel and want to know the true self Boa Vista

“Nice but overpriced”

We stayed for a few days at Migrante. The guesthouse was adequate but nothing special. It is nicely decorated in an eclectic style. Breakfast is ok, not particularly good. The manager didnot seem at all interested in giving information or making us feel welcome. We felt the rate of 90 euros was very overpriced. We stayed at much nicer rooms in Cabo Verde for less. When I look at the reviews after having stayed there, it almost seems like we stayed at a completely different place than some of the other reviewers. The seaview must refer to a different appartment that is part of the guesthouse at some other location, because the guesthouse itself is in a street in Sal Rei and has a view of the street. At night it is quite noisy from the bar below. The truth is that this probably is the best place in Sal Rei for independent travellers, but only by lack of alternatives (at least in low season).

“Perfect place to stay on Boa Vista”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2011

We went here 2 weeks in February and we were so happy. It's the best place to stay. Away from the mass hotels and straight in the city centre. We stayed in the apartment which was really beautiful and very big for 2 persons. It has a great ocean view. We also saw some other rooms and they were beautiful to. They have a good taste there :-)

The owner of Migrante is really nice and laidback to. We didn;t have any cash and the banks are only open during weekdays so we had a problem. Christiano (the owner) lend us around 100 euro (in Escudos) so we could have a nice first weekend. For people from Europe. The ATM's only support visa. We had Maestro and that is not accepted. at the bank you can get money with your credit card but not in the ATM's.

Boa Vista is a really nice place but in a few years this island will get a lot of tourists and will be a tourist place just like all the other all-in locations in the world. What a shame.

Migrante will not lose it's charm I think.
