“Absolutely miserable - from start to finish.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

My husband and I booked this hotel for one night because it was close to a friends house for their engagement party. When we first walked in, it looked a little sketchy, but we figured how bad could it be? We got checked into a room on the 2nd floor. The room was "ok" at first, but when you walked into the bathroom - the entire ceiling and wall (especially around the shower) was peeling off the wall! We left the hotel around 5pm to go to an engagement party and when we got back around midnight, the key to our room wouldnt work. We went down to the lobby and was told that the guy working earlier didnt remember if we had checked in or not, so they moved us in the computer to the 3rd floor!!!! Are you kidding me???? So they reactivated our keys and we went to the room to go to bed. The next morning we went to check out and they tried to overcharge us. I guess when they changed our room - the rate went up? So finally they printed the reciept saying the price we were quoted, which i then signed (i did not sign the receipt for the higher price, luckily). Well, i just logged onto my credit card and guess which price they charged me... The HIGHER ONE!!!! Now-it is only a matter of $24 difference, however, the stay was horrible and noone seemed competent enough to handle our one night stay! My credit card company will be working on the disputed charges now which is another big hassle. I've also contacted guest relations and they are sending it over to the manager of the hotel to work on (which i'm not going to be holding my breath for).
It is a very good priced hotel, however If i had known what this experience would have been like, I would have found a different hotel for a little more money.
This is my first review ever written. But I feel very strongly about the bad experience that I had, and wanted to make others aware to be very careful (and watch your credit card statement) if staying here!

“Huh? Was this the same hotel other reviewers stayed at?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

I named my own price with Priceline.com and got a room for one night at this hotel for a steep discount. I've used Priceline for several other trips with decent results, but the reviews for this hotel made me think my luck had run out.

My wife and I found this to be a great, great deal and an excellent room. Check in was very fast, front desk clerk friendly and efficient. The hotel grounds were well maintained and the common areas were clean -- although there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke in the hallway outside our room (in a non-smoking section of the hotel).

The room itself was VERY clean and well appointed. The only disappointment was the smaller TV -- given it's an extended stay hotel, I would have thought they'd have a large screen TV. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, pots & pans, microwave, fridge, stove top and everything you'd need to cook.

The bed was extremely comfortable -- better than our bed at home. We found the hotel to be very quiet and didn't hear a peep all night long. We were on the back side (non-street side) of the hotel, but the hotel is tucked away and not really near a busy street. We did hear a train once, but it wasn't bothersome. We certainly did not hear any other guests -- not even the traditional slamming of doors first thing in the morning!

We did find the next morning that we didn't have an ironing board in our room (although we did have some wrinkled clothes!). Within 5 minutes of calling the front desk, the housekeeper brought the needed ironing board.

Overall, this was one of the better deals we've got through Priceline. The hotel was in a great, great location -- within 2-5 miles of the places we were going -- close to restaurants & shopping and not too far from New York City. I'm cheap -- I wouldn't pay full price, but I'll certainly pray we win this hotel again when we stay in Nanuet again!

“The term craptacular comes to mind”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2010

I had the underwhelming displeasure of staying at this hotel recently. Considering the price for your typical NY, NJ hotel, this property was reasonably priced, but I would definitely pay a little to stay elsewhere.

- The cleanliness of the hotel was 'ok'
- The Sleep Quality was poor due to the lack of proper insulation... The classic paper walls hotel. It's one thing to hear someone pass gas in the next room, it's another to smell it.
- The front desk staff were hit and miss. The first shift front desk agents seemed to be provide more consistent worthwhile CS.
- The reliability of the housekeeping was 'ok'

I tend to consider Candlewood Suites a lesser brand to IHG's similar StayBridge Suites and this property definitely confirms my consideration.

“Lots of Good Reasons to Stay Elsewhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2010

10 seconds after entering this property you know it's for the low-rent crowd.

The front desk staff is casual to the point of unprofessionalism. My colleague reported that in the evening loud rap music was playing in the area behind the check-in desk. The desk staff are repeatedly away from the desk for long periods of time.

Either there are people living in the hotel, or staying there very long-term. I stayed two nights (not consecutively) and the same man sat in the combo laundry/fitness room watching TV for several hours each evening. He did not look like a guest, but seemed on friendly terms with the staff. A one point he engaged in a loud & heated argument with another woman (a guest?)

I witnessed a drug deal in the hallway outside of my room.

Oddly enough the rooms themselves were clean and well appointed. If it weren't for the staff and common areas I would have rated this property average.

Does this review sound bizarre? So was my stay.

“Room was Clean But, Won't Go Back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2010

The location was convenient for our business travel, the price was reasonable and the room was clean, but other than that, it was not a good stay. We stayed here two separate nights in the same week. The first night I was in a street side room and there was a banging sound most of the night, which may have been the flag beating on the flag pole, but it was loud and kept me awake most of the night. The walls were so thin that i could hear every alarm clock that went off starting about 2 hours before I planned to get up and continuing to the point that I gave up tryiing to sleep. The second room was somewhat quieter. Other issues included:
There were only two packs of decaf coffee left in the room and no regular.
The towels had a horrible vineager smell to them.
There were no tissues in the box.
There were several questable looking people hanging around the hotel and did not appear to have a room there.
There is no wireless internet.
