My husband and I were visiting our daughter, an engineer working with an NGO. We had a wonderful stay at the Gately. The food was superb, the location on the banks of the Nile extraordinary; if you like birdlife there were extraordinary birds including pelicans within the grounds. The hotel was very beautiful with friendly and courteous, smartly uniformed staff, African art on display including quirky maps and paintings, patterned tablecloths and a sweet gift shop. The laundry service was excellent and clothes were returned washed and ironed the next day. This was extremely useful as after our first night we went on a two-day safari which was a muddy enough business so it was great to be able to have the laundry dealt with immediately. The hotel is a great base for visiting the area, convenient to waterfalls, the source of the white Nile and where the ashes of Ghandi were scattered and all the local attractions such as Source cafe, Nile water activities. It was a terrific starting off point for our safari with Emma's tours, an amazing trip where we spent 2 nights under canvass and saw chimps in the wild and 4 of the big 5 (only missed the leopard which is of course very shy) within the 2 days. Breakfast on the terrace of this hotel was a daily delight, watching the action on the Nile with boats coming and going across the garden.
Room Tip: The cottages on the grounds are more modern than within the house
