This was my 2nd and last time staying at the “family owned” Crowne Plaza. In the past I always stayed at the Hilton, unfortunately there is no longer a Hilton Hotel in Lake Placid so I opted for the Crowne Plaza. My son and I wanted to have a vacation together and I hesitated to return for a second time but I went a head and booked the reservation. When I arrived I wasn’t greeted nicely by the staff but rather surly and abrupt by a young man who seemed annoyed to be working. He seemed even more annoyed with me when I opted not to pay for an upgrade or join there reward program. It was obvious they must work on commission. The room was adequate, clean and comfortable; I have no complaints about this part of our stay. However, the main issue is the staff and service you receive while there. No one went out of there way to make it “special” for us. We came in contact with several staff members from maids, wait staff, maintenance people and they all appeared, for lack of a better word..miserable. To me that says a lot about the management/ownership of the hotel. My son had to go to the front desk because he lost his money in a soda machine and the staff member gave him a hard time and almost didn’t want to refund his money. Is that normal guest treatment or just because he is a teenager? I was also surprised when I went to my car that there was a gathering of staff near an entrance all smoking close to the door. It was bitter cold out but it was rude to walk through that smoke especially when I found out later that the property is 100% non-smoking. We paid what I consider premium prices and our room was equipped with a mini coffee maker but on our way out in the morning I was shocked to find out that they do not offer complimentary coffee in the lobby for their guests. The reason I received was they offer the coffee packs in the room. To me that is a “no brainer” amenity for today’s hotels. We did have lunch twice at the hotel in the Great Room and it does offer fantastic views of the area. However, none of the staff wowed us with the service; in fact I had to go find the hostess in order to get a check as no one was to be found. Upon check out I witnessed another guest disputing fees with the Desk Clerk, it was getting heated and she went into the back and an older man came out who was apparently the General Manager. I was appalled how the situation seemed to go and later I realized that the staff problems at this hotel obviously start at the top. Personally, I think the General Manager and later all the staff need to take a Dale Carnegie Course. It’s too bad as this hotel has great location and views but comes up so short on service that can easily be corrected if management wanted to.
