“Nice views, ho-hum room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Our family stayed here about 15 years ago and remembered a nice experience and beautiful lobby. I am a priority club member and when I called to book I asked for a room with a view. The receptionist stated rather curtly, "ALL our rooms have views." True enough. Our room (#403) had a nice view of the Lake and mountains. The lobby was still very nice and similar to what we had remembered.

The room itself, however, was a typical hotel room-nothing special. The bathroom was fine, water pressure was good. Parking was a bit crowded.

We received a "coupon" for one cup of coffee apiece which we had to present to the hostess at the restaurant in the morning and she filled two cups and gave them to us. We were not allowed in the restaurant unless we were eating breakfast there, which we were not. I thought the whole coupon-for-coffee procedure a bit odd and insulting.

We had remembered a long fight of (outdoor)stairs that lead down to the town beyond the parking lot. The stairs were still there, but in very poor shape and crumbling. We were still able to negotiate them, but I would warn that they are very steep and not for those who aren't in reasonable shape.

Thank you for returning to our hill-top resort hotel! We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Adirondack Great Room and the views from your room. We would certainly suggest taking coffee into the Great Room. We have a wide variety of seating, from the cozy stone fireplace, to comfortable couches near the windows to enjoy the expansive view. Thank you for writing.

“Nice lobby and new wing... Most of hotel is Holiday Inn with some lipstick”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

There is a lack of electrical outlets. There are weird power strips installed in rooms to provide more outlets. They are installed in a sketchy manner and the outlets are very loose.

The hot tub had very weak jets but was still much appreciated after a day of outside winter sports. The pool is nice, deep and towels are always available.

The location is very good and you can walk almost everywhere in Lake Placid.

Thank you for reviewing your stay at our resort hotel. I am sorry that you had issues with the electrical outlets in your guest room. I will notify our maintenance staff of your concern. We do appreciate the compliments of our indoor pool and of our location. We are just a short walk away from the Main Street shops and the Olympic Center. “Nasty worst hotel experience treated like third class citizen”

I am a priority club member and have had very good experiences in the past with this chain of hotels. Lake placid is one of my favorite and most beautiful destinations both in summer and winter. I was eagerly looking forward to a 5 night ski vacation and looked forwar to trying the Crowne Plaza.

After a 10 hour drive through a snow storm I arrived at the beautiful lobby and looked forward to a good sleep. The lobby, very decieving, is beautiful. The first room we were given was beside an elevator overlooking the roof and ventilation system - very loud, noisy.

I then requested a better room and was given a dreadful room looking inside at the pool ! Hot, humid, strong smell of chlorine.

I returned to the front desk and was told it was my fault for booking online - should have called in my booking.

So, had a horrible sleep about to hours , woken up by kids yelling in the pool.

Promptly booked out and drove to Stowe to finish our ski vacation.

I thought being a priority club member would have benefits.....not true obviously. I'm sure this hotel has much better rooms but to be given two rooms that aren't habitable is a real slap in the face and meant I didn't stay in lake placid and spend my tourist dollars there.

We appreciate the review of your stay. I am very sorry to hear that you did not have an enjoyable experience at our family owned and operated resort. Because your reservation was made online, we were not made aware of your Priority Club Rewards membership. Also, we were entirely sold out during the time of your stay, so the opportunity to change your room again would not have been possible. Had your reservation been made through the hotel, we would have known about your Priority Club Rewards status and could have placed you in a different room to begin with. We certainly meant no disrespect to you, and are sorry you did not get the opportunity to enjoy Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain. Thank you for writing.

“Quick Stop....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Last minute stop, for a little skiing, the rooms were great, with views over the village or valley. Staff very helpful and friendly, definite place to stop again when we are in the area.

Room Tip: Village view is the best....

“Nice Physical Hotel, Terrible Guest Service!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

This was my 2nd and last time staying at the “family owned” Crowne Plaza. In the past I always stayed at the Hilton, unfortunately there is no longer a Hilton Hotel in Lake Placid so I opted for the Crowne Plaza. My son and I wanted to have a vacation together and I hesitated to return for a second time but I went a head and booked the reservation. When I arrived I wasn’t greeted nicely by the staff but rather surly and abrupt by a young man who seemed annoyed to be working. He seemed even more annoyed with me when I opted not to pay for an upgrade or join there reward program. It was obvious they must work on commission. The room was adequate, clean and comfortable; I have no complaints about this part of our stay. However, the main issue is the staff and service you receive while there. No one went out of there way to make it “special” for us. We came in contact with several staff members from maids, wait staff, maintenance people and they all appeared, for lack of a better word..miserable. To me that says a lot about the management/ownership of the hotel. My son had to go to the front desk because he lost his money in a soda machine and the staff member gave him a hard time and almost didn’t want to refund his money. Is that normal guest treatment or just because he is a teenager? I was also surprised when I went to my car that there was a gathering of staff near an entrance all smoking close to the door. It was bitter cold out but it was rude to walk through that smoke especially when I found out later that the property is 100% non-smoking. We paid what I consider premium prices and our room was equipped with a mini coffee maker but on our way out in the morning I was shocked to find out that they do not offer complimentary coffee in the lobby for their guests. The reason I received was they offer the coffee packs in the room. To me that is a “no brainer” amenity for today’s hotels. We did have lunch twice at the hotel in the Great Room and it does offer fantastic views of the area. However, none of the staff wowed us with the service; in fact I had to go find the hostess in order to get a check as no one was to be found. Upon check out I witnessed another guest disputing fees with the Desk Clerk, it was getting heated and she went into the back and an older man came out who was apparently the General Manager. I was appalled how the situation seemed to go and later I realized that the staff problems at this hotel obviously start at the top. Personally, I think the General Manager and later all the staff need to take a Dale Carnegie Course. It’s too bad as this hotel has great location and views but comes up so short on service that can easily be corrected if management wanted to.
