My husband and I stayed at the Golden Arrow in mid-February 2012. We got a very good value by booking a ski package - we used the "In-Season Midweek Package - Stay 2 nights & get the 3rd free" (advertised on their website). The only downside of using the package was that they would absolutely not let us upgrade our room for any of the nights. This seemed strange, especially since we asked them upon check-in when the hotel was clearly not booked to capacity (why wouldn't they want to take more money for rooms that were vacant?). The common areas of the hotel are clean and homey (more family-oriented than luxurious). The adjacent restaurant, Generations, has a nice atmosphere but getting into the restaurant through the hotel is strange - you have to go through a few unmarked doors and walk through the back of the restaurant to the host stand by the street entrance of the restaurant. We had drinks and breakfast there - good, but not exceptional. The indoor pool area is very nice and has a number of ammenities (sauna, steam room, hot tub, etc.), but for the later half of our stay, it was crowded with families and kids who were in town for a hockey tournament. The hotel room itself was comfortable but we did have to arrange for the tub to be fixed after our first shower (it didn't drain). They fixed it immediately, but left the plunger in our bathroom. They accommodated our request for a later checkout (12 pm instead of 11 am) at the front desk on the morning we left, but didn't communicate it to the cleaning staff, who started to clean our room before 12 pm (they were nice about the error and it turned out fine). The walls of the hotel rooms, however, seemed to be pretty thin as we heard everything going on in the hallways (which was an issue when the hockey players checked in). Overall, we were happy with the Golden Arrow because it was clean, centrally located, and a good value. The Lake Placid area, however, has a lot of hotels/motels to choose from, so if sticking to a budget isn't your primary goal, it may be worthwhile to look around.
