Imagine borrowing your bachelor brother-in-law's hand-built cabin. The decor is handbuilt with an Adirondack flair, and the kitchen equipment is yardsale eclectic. Blinds were decorated by curtains in animal prints with fused seams. The couch was upholstered in a similar fabric, using a staple gun. (I don't want to know what it looked like underneath.)
The cleaning was spotty. Floors looked okay, refrigerator & kitchen clean, cobwebs in various places, mildew stains on shower curtain, toilet and bathroom sink clean. There was a musty smell when we first entered the cabin, but it faded overnight and was not a problem after keeping the AC on.
The beds were comfortable, the sheets and mattresses were clean, but the mattress covers should have been replaced. The TV remote in the master bedroom worked after we reversed the batteries. No TV in other bedroom. The large screen TV in the family room worked. We did not try either DVD player. AC noisy, but worked well. The gas fireplace was off for the summer.
The bathroom was small, just room for a toilet, small sink, tub/shower, and room to turn around. Towels were soft, clean, and plentiful.
The kitchen and table were sized for four people. The refrigerator looked and worked as if new. The dishwasher was very small and was missing a latch handle, but it worked well. The coffee maker worked. The microwave was small and VERY slow. The kitchen sink was small, too. If you stay here, bring any pots or pans (griddles) that you MUST have to prepare the meals on your menu. You may not find the right size or kind of pan in the cupboards. The pots and pans were dented, scraped, etc. Bring a good knife, too, if you are picky. Only one washcloth & 2 small dishtowels, changed if you throw them on the table before you leave.
I have given so much detail because this place will appeal to some people. As a camper gone soft, I appreciated avoiding the mosquitoes at night and cooking indoors with hot running water, a refrigerator, and a DISHWASHER! Also being used to campground bathrooms, I could deal with a few mildew stains. It was also the right price for our family, since we saved money by cooking breadfast and supper and packing lunches.
However, if you are used to staying in motels, you should avoid this place. When we ran out of something, like paper towels or coffee, we had to ask for it. A broken chair brought to their attention was replaced immediately. The fire ring for all of the cabins was located behind our cabin. It looked like a junkyard of old plastic chairs and an open shed with firewood and discarded furniture.
Before we left, we noticed an announcement from the town of Lake Placid tacked on the door. It warned that failure to pay the electric bill by the end of the month would result cancellation of service. It seems like this place may not be in business much longer under this management.
Room Tip: Two years ago, we stayed in the cabin with the jacuzzi. It was a great cabin, and it was much cleane...
