“Great location, good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We stayed for 4 nights in January 2012 while we were in Lake Placid to ski. The hotel is very nice and well appointed. We will most likely return in the future. Our only small concerns are the fact that the hotel bills itself as a high end resort, they even use the term "Service at it's Peak." However they didn't offer bell service or valet parking during our stay.

“Relax by the fireplace in the lobby.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We've been to this hotel many times, and the conference facilities and accommodations are improving remarkably. Our 4th floor room had a lovely view across the lake to the mountains, and the bathroom had a deluxe shower. The location is convenient to shops and restaurants. Pet friendly, there's a bowl of dog treats at check-in!

“Front Desk and Pricing”

Hi there, My husband and I, about 6 other families and our entire hockey team stayed at this hotel for a hockey tournament from Jan 19-22. Upon arrival at 3 am as we had to drive from Ontario in a snow storm, the front desk was mildly polite, telling us to be quiet!! We were quiet - we were half asleep!! I will admit the beds were very comfortable and the cleaning staff friendly and accomdating BUT the director of front desk operations (or whatever he called himself) was so unprofessional it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I could not understand why, he put some of our guests, is less attractive rooms, for lack of a better term, and charged them more AND the guests did not know this was going to be the case. The parents were offered a move to be closer to the team and the rooms were not near as nice as the same building BUT the price went up - REALLY!! Also the team rate was more then the rate I received, that can't be right. There were at least 30 of us in that hotel, and eating at their restaurant..hhmmm!

When one of the parents approached the front desk director, he was loud, rude and condesceding. I have never seen anything like it. When the parent addressed the situation, the price and that she was not advised, he was of no help at all!! He told her he would look in to it and resolved nothing. Two other parents tried to address on her behalf and he told them in so many words to mind their own business. Well, that was it for me, I will never go back or refer this place to anyone, anytime. Shame as I can only imagine how much they made off us that weekend - for a lousy few $ in bad charges and service - my advice, stay clear

“We got pretty much everything we needed...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

There are just not enough words to describe how great this place is. From check in, which was smooth and timely to check out and all in between. We were visiting Lake Placid for two reasons: to see our daughter play hockey in a local tournament and then stay on to tour and do some skiing. We were there a total of 7 nights. I will try to split this up into sections:

The Lobby: clean, comfy, lovely cosy bar with fireplace just off the side. With a fire going constantly the smell of wood burning warmed your soul. The staff at the desk, no matter what the inquiry or request was professional and gave mutual respect.
Our room: 303, we looked out the window and although directly below us was the roof, beyond that was Mirror Lake and the mountains. Each morning experiencing a new version of sunrise that I could see right from our bed pretty much. The room is lovely and comfy. Perfect for our extended stay. The bed was amazing. King size and comfy! The bathroom is lovely, great shower. Although the design is a bit flawed and water gets on the floor, there were lots of towels to catch the drip and really didn't bother us at all. While there were a few small suggestions for management regarding the room...over all it was perfect.

Housekeeping:overall it was okay but I hope management will read this and consider these suggestions to truly make High Peaks the perfect spot. The very small, odd shaped garbage cans are no good and really useless. Always full, so we always had a loose bag of garbage hanging around - we ate most meals in room from grocery store - great savings. Once the housekeeping forgot to empty (or didn't realize it was garbage), not a huge deal, my husband simply placed in large cans outside in parking garage. We requested a microwave and received one within 5 minutes. It was pretty dirty inside and out but did the job.One day our room didn't get cleaned (we were in and out several times, and when out, gone for 2 hours) At no point did we see the cleaning cart on our floor. Again not a huge deal to us. We can reuse towels, i simply went to front desk to ask for coffee, etc. for the morning. The biggest issue i had with housekeeping was although i loved having glasses made of glass rather than plastic, it was clear that the glasses were not replaced with freshly dishwasher cleaned (and disinfected) glasses, but rather wiped out with a rag (streaks, my old lipstick etc. was easily seen) - I found this really disturbing. We bought red beer cups to drink out of. To management: if i may suggest supply housekeeping with stationary to greet guests, introduce themselves by name and have a check list of special requests (extra towels, # of extra coffee, sugar, etc) for a very personal touch. One hotel we stayed at did this and truly it was a nice touch. As well address the glass issue...

The Dancing Bears restaurant/Bar: we only experienced this one afternoon when we vacated the room for housekeeping to clean up. We had one drink. Staff was again very welcoming, i was looking for a great Bloody Ceasar, they only had ingredients for a Bloody Mary, which was different but fine...Great atmosphere.
The pool/hot tub - we felt lucky to have the place to ourselves. Its clean and refreshing. Although a bit dated, we felt it was kept clean.

Our final night was met with a very unexpected twist which really proved the hotels professionalism and helpfulness. I seriously injured my knee skiing in the afternoon, by evening my pain was significant and caused me to faint and go into shock. My husband had to call ambulance and the night manager came with the EMTs to our room. He was professional and courteous to get whatever paperwork he needed to take care of. Poor fella it was his first night as the manager. I can't remember his name but this is directly to Hotel Management: he was doing a great job and helpful in all aspects, congratulations for hiring such a fine young man and trusting your establishment to his care.

I highly recommend this hotel. Very fair pricing and awesome through and through. I would stay again if ever in the area...my skiing days may be done though, so perhaps in the summer?

Room Tip: King size courtyard view 3rd floor, have good value and still you are able to see Mirror Lake and th...

“Warm weather in Lake Placid (December 2011) Bait and Switch?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We had a nice long weekend stay from 12/31 to 1/2 for my birthday. We had really unseasonable weather - super warm and no snow. The front desk is not very helpful - as my husband checked in first and I came with the kids afterwards. The clerk on duty claim that they don't have our reservation and I told him that my husband just checked in. Finally he realized that our last name was spelled incorrectly after telling me that they are overbooked. The website advertised Morton Brown toiletries - there were none in the room - however, my husband tipped housekeeping extra and asked for it. (I hate whatever they had in the room) Overall, the resort is quite nice and Dancing Bear's food is good - but there are some Bait and Switch going on - so Buyer beware. Know what you are entitled to and make sure you get it!!!! I didn't have a package and paid full price on everything - room, breakfast, dinner and I had to be on full lookout to make sure I'm not being cheated. Kinda lessen the experience of 'spa vacation' because of their bait and switch attempts. I hope management will do something about it because my husband really loves Lake Placid and we might just have to stay elsewhere next time.
