“Best Campsites”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

My husband and I had the best time camping at Oanob. We stayed at one of their privately owned camp sites, complete with lapa, private deck, braai facilities, purified running water (plus kitchen sinks!) and its own private shower & toilet.

It was only N$130 p/p per night. We put up our tent under the lapa, which is laid out with interlocking. The tent was safe from the late afternoon winds, and was always cool inside because it wasn't in the sun.

The staff were all very friendly, swimming in the lake was fantastic, and it was overall a peaceful and relaxing experience. I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for one of their privately owned campsites that have a lapa and its own private bathroom.

“Potentially great, in reality APPALING”

If you are looking for a campsite this place is the pits!

One toilet and one shower to be shared between at least 6 if not more pitches. Sites were overgrown, bins were left lying on their sides, the list goes on. If we had not pre-booked and paid we would have left.

We were offered a choice of two sites, in reality there was no choice as the trees were so overgrown we couldn’t have got to one of the pitches. The other was also dreadful so we paid to upgrade. On first impressions this was better, there was a sink, balcony, and shade. Pity there wasn’t any water to the sink! Another plus was no one else was camping because the one and only toilet didn’t flush either, there was no hot water, oh, and the electricity didn’t work.

So toilet not flushing, no hot water and no electricity was reported to reception, response ‘someone will be down’. To cut a very long story short, only the toilet was fixed (temporarily, we flushed it twice and that was it) none of the other repairs took place.

We decided to eat at the ‘a la carte restaurant’ that evening. The chef or assistant chef appeared to be attached to her mobile phone, and when the menu arrived ‘A la carte’ seemed a little bit of an exaggeration. There was a very limited choice of steak or game with chips, or chicken with Monkey Gland Sauce. Either this meat had been dead a long time, or it was in fact a mobile phone disguised with some form of gravy. Another odd combination to the game with gravy was the chips, swimming in vinegar and the token salad swimming in some kind of dressing!

It was a dark walk back from the restaurant as the lights didn’t work, and that included those in the toilet. The next morning the man who had been propping up the bar all night appeared from around the back of the toilets and said “you’ve not had any electric!” Obvious statement, my husband then went to investigate and found the main electricity point TURNED OFF, so turned on both the electricity and the hot water. On complaining the reception said the electric had been turned off because it was dangerous when it rained and an electrician had been called to repair the hot water tank!

You’ve been warned.

“Beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2010

Beautiful and peaceful surroundings. Lovely decorated chalets with good facilities. We stayed with a group of students who loved the place. I would love to go back with my family as there are lots of things to keep children entertained. Great all round, for families, school trips, quiet holidays or business trips. Far away from shops etc ,If you are after nighlife and entertainment.

“Beautiful, peaceful and a good alternative to Windhoek if you're travelling south”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2009

We loved this place. The lake is a beautiful, bird-filled oasis in the desert, and the facilities are well spaced, reasonably well equipped self-catering chalets on the lake edge, and they have a restaurant too. It is owned by a collective from the local Baster community, so hopefully your money goes where it is most needed. It is also only about 100k from Windhoek airport, so if you are doing "the loop" you can avoid staying in Windhoek twice and make a start on your way south even if you arrive in the afternoon.

It was very peaceful and quiet when we were there, although I understand it can get pretty busy in the weekends.
