I am writing this review 8 weeks after having stayed in that hotel, but looking at the recent reviews, it seems nothing has changed in 8 weeks and I am sure nothing will have changed in the next 8 weeks
First and foremost the location is not that great. The area looks like the type of place where the police would take their time to respond. It's in Jamaica, Queens, close to JFK. It is two sharply contrasted pictures, a block of large hotels such as this one and the Marriot and other big names in an area that looks a little rundown. I would not take a late night promenade in that neighbourhood.
The hotel is convenient only for those transiting in New York overnight for one night. For those coming to NYC on vacation for more than a day I would not recommend this hotel. Actually I would not really recommend this hotel to anyone. Considering it is a Doubletree/Hilton venture they could and should do better.
I arrived in NYC in the evening at around 22:00, as I said before the area was shady, poorly lit and the neighbourhood didn't look safe. My first thoughts in the cab was " damn this cab driver is taking me to his boys, I am gonna be in trouble..." I actually asked him if he knew where he was going, 'cause at one point the script did not look like a happy ending. At the hotel, the porter/bellboy was a middle aged gentleman who insisted on taking my luggage to the room even though I told him I was fine. He said he was going to show me the way and the room (fair enough...it's common practice), what he really wanted was a fat tip ( which he got). The room was very dark, two light bulbs were broken and not replaced and the porter took note of it. I also informed reception. It took more than 24 hours to replace one light, the second one was never replaced in the three nights I spent there. It didn't really bothered me because everynight I would come back to the hotel very late in the early hours of the morning. Just sleep then wake up and leave the hotel. I never once stayed for breakfast or woke up in time for breakfast... But still not good service there.
I had dinner once in the hotel restaurant when coming back for a change of clothes one evening and it was not enjoyable. The restaurant itself was poor in design and service. It was understaffed, just one waiter and another person who struck me as a supervisor of sort who undertook waiter's duties because the back orders were taking too long. It was really a diner not a restaurant. Let me explain, I walked in sat somewhere and waited for a (long) while. Three tables changed their orders to take-aways because they had had enough. When the waiter took my order he shouted it at the cook through the kitchen door, and inquired about some other orders that were taking long ( I took it that the kitchen must be understaffed too). My food came I took it as a take-away, it was bland, I threw it away and proceeded with my plans to go back to Manhattan.
The same porter of the previous night told me he was going to call me a cab. When the cab came it was a Black "semi-limo" if there is such a description. The driver was the porter's good friend and I quickly told them that I was gonna get a yellow cab at a better rate. He wanted $70 to take me to The Rock, I told him I had paid $45 with the previous yellow cab. We agreed to $50 and midway in the tunnel to manhattan the guy was talking about this ride being a VIP ride and it would just have to be $65 !! I cut it down to $60 and he went on insisting to become my guide for the night...I politely but firmly declined. By the way this driver works with the hotel...
The hotel room was average, nothing to say really. Not bad, not great, very lukewarm. They could do better. Reception desk was friendly and courteous. I did not explore the hotel because in New York you only go to your hotel to sleep. But the aircon was old school, noisy and not very efficient. The view from all angles is...let's jut say that there is nothing to view in that part of town.
The most important reason why I would not recommend this hotel, is that it is far from Manhattan. Unless you know your way around the subway routes, a round trip taxi to say Battery Park in Manhattan will cost you $100 to $120 (round trip). In terms of value for money, there is better competion in town.
Important tip: When in New York and a cab driver or any other service provider asks you "So you from New York" just say "yeah I am", or " I used to live here" or "I come around twice a month" They will think twice before taking you for a ride...

Greetings from the team at Doubletree JFK airport;
Thank you for reaching out to us on issues that we need to address ASAP. The feedback though disturbing is being looked into by our Director of transportation and rest assured that corrective methods will be put in place.
We are going through the process of refurbishing the entire product and I am sure you must have noticed that during your visit. Being more of a transit versus a destination hotel we are situated closer to the airport and a few miles away from the city.
The above being said we would appreciate you giving us another chance to make things good on your next trip via New York and would like to extend a 35% off our best available rate that will have breakfast included for two. Please call our in house reservation team to avail of this offer.
