Like most Mexican places, the outside appears quite basic, and the real show happens inside. Quinta Zoe is a perfect example - the plain outside door on the street leads into a calm shady outdoor patio and a series of beautiful rental rooms. We stayed for three nights in #3 (in the centre): large room (high-ceilings, fan, opening windows with screens) with very comfortable king bed and the best sheet/pillow linen we experienced in 3 weeks in Mexico. One firm pillow was replaced with a softer one when we asked for that. The bathroom was compact - but had a nightlight, lots of hot water, and big soft thirsty towels. The fan in the bathroom was noisy. A large blue plastic barrel-like container of purified water is available to guests at all times - so we could refill our little bottles whenever needed.
It's not a B&B, but comes with an offer for morning coffee or tea in the main kitchen - which also had a series of books, map and guides for the area. The host was great - very personable and welcoming. He easily answered all our questions and gave great advice about recommended restaurants, and highlights of the city. Queretaro is a very safe city with lots of industry - but travellers will want to stay here in the historic centre.
Quinta Zoe was rebuilt from the ground up not too long ago, so looks brand new, has modern wiring and plumbing, and is run by ex-pat Americans who understand the needs of international visitors. Some of the other guests had returned there for years and it's easy to understand why. The location is ideal with great access (on foot) to people-filled squares, all variety of dining and shopping. I'd definitely return here.
