“Superb river-side Lodge of the highest calibre”

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in mid-Aug 10, having flown in from Lusaka (ex-Kafue) to Jeki Airstrip, then travelled up river by power boat for 40 mins or so (a fabulous way to arrive, having had your very own mini boat-borne safari en route. Location is stunning and right on the river, with super views at whatever game chose to wander/swim by (including herds of Elephants). Game was omni-present and we had to be driven to our Room twice in 2 days, due to Elephant & Buffalo. Room was much bigger, grander and stylish than we expected (cynical toad that I am), and not over looked by anything or anyone. Delightful place to lounge after lunch and bird watch (pool was a good spot too, but a bit exposed to midday sun). Game drives were very productive & better than we had hoped as the immediate area round the Camp is quite thick bush, but it varies quite drastically as you go further from the river. Watching a pride of Lions with cubs intent on nothing but mayhem & play for over an hour was a complete joy, especially as Alan had the same camera as me & a passion for trying to get the perfect shot. Night drives were exceptional too, and we found so many Mongoose(s), Leopards, & Porcupines. Tried the Canoe trip (down one of the channels,as main river is far too powerful & staggeringly fast) to try and slay the ghost of hippos past, so a bit of a test of steel & nerve. Exciting - definitely, but whilst it challenged, we never felt really scared - more thrilled at what we saw & experienced & took some great photos. Food was divine & huge credit to the Backroom staff, no doubt aided and abetted by Nicci (a serious Chefesse in her own right), who we first encountered, with Alan, in 2005 in Namibia !! Pinnacle of this Visit was our last luncheon in the middle of the Zambezi. Surprise or what ! Magical experience & again superb food (4 course meal with Wine etc) under canvas on table and chairs resting on a mid-stream sand bar into which we all gradually sank. Many giggles, laughs (or was it hysterics) and hundreds of Photos taken. Then to truely cap it off, & just before we departed down stream in a power boat to Old Mondoro, we had the Elephants crossing the river right infront of us, with snorkles raised, shepherding a 6 month old calf. "Sweet" and "cute" were not the words to describe the scene. A fabulous place, stay, trip, experience, so massive Thanks to ALL the Staff (Sorry we are not going to single one out, but you know who you are). We will be back one day & I WILL try and catch a Tiggerfish. Recommended especially to those that like their safaris in some (quite a lot actually) comfort & style, & Birders (we're not, but hear it is highly rated on that score).

“Brilliant stay”

Whilst spending time working in the east of Zambia my wife and I treated ourselves to a four day stay at the Sausage Tree Camp having never been on safari before. From beginning to end we had an absolutely fantastic time. All the staff were excellent from the management to the safari guides to the camp staff. The accomodation was 5 star safari style and the food was incredible. We were there in May when surroundings were pretty green but we still managed to see lots of game. Whilst we loved the action packed schedule it would have been quite full on if you were expecting a relaxing break.
Overall a faultless experience.

“Magical and exclusive camp”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2011

This camp is among my favourites. It was our second time at Sausage tree camp and we did not regret it coming back. We love the location on the lower Zambezi. It is so beauftiful to be at this unspoiled part of Africa!
The rooms are luxury tents. They can get very hot in October and this was kind of hart during the afternoons (this is an area for improvement). Their most beautiful accomodation is the private house, which has its own pool. I have found that staying there was much cooler and nicer then the single tents. I did not want to leave the camp but just to observe the animals from the verandah. There was plenty of wildlife, specially elephants and hippos.
Food was excellent. The lodge was fully booked at the time we were there but since it is a small camp you have a feeling of privacy and exclusivity always.
The managers Nicci and Alan were very friendly and always ready to meet any special wish. Thank you guys!!!
Game drives are fantastic. You have several options for activities including river cruises. We had fantastic sightings from leopard and lions. I have got scared from elephants because they were so many and not always looked relaxed. But of course this is part of the reason why we go to a safari camp right? I hope we can come back one day. It will remain a place to return for a safari in our priority list. As they say it in Zambia: It is real Africa!

“Fantastic camp in a fantastic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2010

I stayed at STC with my husband for 6 nights towards the end of the 2010 season. From the moment we landed at Jeki airstrip and were met by one of the camp guides, we knew we had arrived somewhere very special and we were not disappointed at all during our stay.

The location of the camp could not be better. It is a beautiful setting right on the edge of the Zambezi and you are right in the thick of the wildlife - even our safety briefing on arrival was interrupted by an elephant wandering through the bar! Everywhere we went - by jeep, canoe, boat and even just walking between our tent and the main eating area - we were surrounded by wildlife: elephants, crocs, hippos, baboons, monkeys, birds... We saw the pride of lions, including the cubs, several times over the time we were in the park - shading from the heat of the day and guarding their recent kills.

It is obvious that Alan and Nicci, the camp managers, and all their staff take real pride in the camp, the Lower Zambezi National Park and their work. The guides were really knowledgeable and went out of their way to meet ourrequirements. Our butler made us feel very looked after and Alan and Nicci themselves are great company and a real asset to the camp.

I also could not fault our suite - from the luxurious four poster to the private pool - real luxury in quite literally the middle of nowhere! And the food was great (despite what other reviews might say) - not just the delicious breakfasts, salads and hot/cold buffet for lunch and a choice of evening meal, but also the homemade cakes and biscuits at morning/afternoon tea, the snacks with sundowners and the canapes around the fire before dinner.

We could not have had a better time at Sausage Tree and will definitely visit again. I would say that this camp isn't for everyone - if you want an air-conditioned, sterile room with mobile phone access and animal sightings that you share with 30 other vehicles, this place isn't for you. But if you want a really unique and individual experience in the heart of Zambia with a perfect balance between nature and luxury then book now!

“You have to visit this camp!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2010

Sausage Tree Camp was the final destination of our 15 day safari in Botswana and Zambia - and we had expected it to be one of the best experiences of the holiday! We were not disappointed!!!! We had 4 unbelievable days here.

We arrived in our 'caravan' - small aircraft - and were met by a couple of guides who drove us to the boat to travel the lower Zambezi to the camp. The Zambezi River has got to be the most beautiful river in the world and the lower Zambezi is something quite spectacular! Our game viewing began immediately! The hippo's were everywhere - in and out of the water - birdlife and ............elephants! I have never seen so many elephants in one place with our first viewing being over 200 of them drinking and swimming on the waters edge as we rounded a corner. What a magnificent sight!

We arrived at our camp and were met by our hostess and several staff. Cold towels and cold drinks were offered as we were briefed on the safety procedures. This is a stunning camp. It's built on the river and is like something you'd expect out of a movie! Huge white tents on wooden bases.

Hot though - between 40 - 47 degrees every day - but somehow that was not an issue.

Our room was amazing!!! A huge 4 poster king bed looking out over a living area with large wooden sliding doors opening onto a huge deck with our own swimming pool! All overlooking the Zambezi with a double outdoor shower, a double indoor shower, a massive egg bath in the middle of the room and a fully stocked bar (full size bottles) in our bar/dining area! This is absolute 5 star luxury in the middle of nowhere! We were in heaven!

One night we came back from a game drive and were escorted to our room (you can't walk around alone at night - there are no fences) and when we opened the door there was a trail of tealight candles leading to the bath which was drawn and full of bubbles! Champagne on ice and a dinner table set up on our deck! Divine!!!!

The game viewing was great too! After seeing several animal kills in Botswana we were slightly expecting to be disappointed with the game anywhere else! But although we didn't see another kill, we did see a lot of game! And the elephants were just amazing - tiny babies and massive males - all so special! One morning we went on a canoe safari and were surrounded by a herd of around 200 elephant who were crossing the channel in front and behind us! It was exhilerating!

The food here was fabulous! We had a choice for dinner which is great and the barman knew how to make a very fine bloody mary! One lunch time we were all taken by boat to an island where lunch was set up in the shallows under a white canopy! It was magnificent - a Pims BBQ lunch!

We followed a large pride of lion over the days - there were 7 cubs who were adorable. They did kill a buffalo one night and although we missed the kill, we did see them feasting on their trophy the next morning. We saw leopard, buffalo - lots of game but no giraffe in this area!

This is a truly magnificent camp in a stunning location! We were so pleased to have left it to last - it is a combination of pure indulgent luxury and thick exciting bush all on the most beautiful river in the world. I dream of the day we are going back!!!
