“Lots of animal sightings, nice camp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

Nkwali was our third camp, so it's hard not to compare it to other camps. It's bit more relaxed/casual than other camps i visited, but nice. The food was quite tasty (breakfast & lunch are buffets, dinner is family style - good but if you are a picky eater it might be a challenge).
Our trip to Nkwali was a short drive then a boat trip (the dock is sandbags & railings made of cane, quite rustic). The camp is six A frame thatched roof huts plus a main area, dining area, and pool. The room faces the Luangwa river, so lots of visits from hippos & elephants. Game drives were good, saw lots of animals. Our guide was quite knowledgable, but not as personable as other guides we had. My only complaint was no conditioner in the bathroom (not a big deal for guys, but big deal for girls). The staff was quite friendly (the night watchman was amazing, he would appear from no where to escort to & from rooms). The lagoon near the pool/dining area is cool. Elephants come to feed and we saw baboons, lizards, and mongoose near the lagoon.

“Terrific”

We spent a 3 day weekend at Nkwali, during which time we went out on 5 safaris, including a walking safari. One of our most memorable weekends ever. The accommodations are superb, the food delicious, the staff is top notch - our guides Kiki and Victor highly knowledgeable, helpful, and just fun to spend time with, and junior staff Jonathan who joined on the safaris also a fine companion on the trips. This was our first safari and we're hooked. They really take care of you. Every safari we went out on we discovered new animals. No big herds of elephants or buffalo, but we saw many many species large and small (including a chameleon!). Most interesting aspect of the trip was the fact that half the time the animals are looking at YOU. So it lends a certain sense of egalitarianism to the experience. So, thanks to the great staff at Nkwali! Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Go in the off season to get a better deal. At the end of May the weather was just fine.

“River location, great hosts, expert guide”

Three nights spent here at the end of October/beginning of November. This is an informal (though by no means basic) camp on the river with excellent game viewing opportunities. The food was varied, tasty and suited our needs well: lots of salad and vegetables at both brunch and dinner. How they do it is nothing short of miraculous - a triumph of experience and forward planning.
Tim and Emma were charming and enthusiastic hosts and Zebron was as knowledgeable a guide as we have ever had on safari. All staff were helpful and accommodating.
People really couldn't do enough for you: we were given a surprise champagne sundowner one evening in a spectacular setting which we very much appreciated.

“Leopards Galore”

Thank-you Kiki, Tigger and all the wonderful staff at Nkwali Camp. We stayed for 4 nights at the end of July at the begining of our 4th trip to Africa. We hadnt made it to Zambia before, but had heard it was a fabulous place to see the bush and all the wonderful wildlife Africa has to offer. We were not disappointed and hope to come back again as soon as the travel budget allows. The camp is a special place and we were so well looked after that we came home a couple of kilos heavier. All that home backed bread and lovely morning teas, not to mention the fabulous banana jam on toast for breakfast. Dont muck about , its just a great place to stay.

“Great Safari Camp”

It is hard to write something new about this wonderful camp. We spent 4 nights there, and had just a fabulous time. Chalets are more than comfortable, and I particularly loved the outdoor showers!!
The staff at Nkwali is first-rate, from the front office personnel (who helped us with transportation issues), to housekeeping, to guides, hosts (and hostess) etc., they are all extremely friendly, welcoming and experts at what they do. Zebron and Kiki can make anyone laugh, and Kanga our guide has an infectious smile. More than any other factor, they were responsible for our wonderful experience at Nkwali. They even surprised us with a bush breakfast on our last day, as well as a birthday cake for one of our son's.
This camp is in the bush, and animals are free to venture in and out. Elephants greeted us one morning on our way to breakfast, and evenings were spent listening to hippos munching outside our chalet.
Game viewing was very good, including sightings of indigenous giraffe. We were even treated to the sight of a lion climbing a tree to confront a leopard!
I highly recommend Nkwali for anyone interested in a remote camp which provides first-class service.
