We spent 3 nights at Sesriem campsite. The location is excellent since you're inside the park already (a stone's throw from other establishments outside), which gives one preferential access to the trip to the dunes in the morning, and of course to the nearby Elim dune for a quick trip at sunset.
The individual campsites are mostly excellent, and you have a huge area to yourself, surrounded by a small stone wall. This ensures a reasonable amount of privacy. Ablution facilities are ok - there were however some broken windows and a broken (banging) door. Signs of neglect creeping in here!
Our allocated site was already occupied but it was no problem for management to give us another - which in our view was better. Problem easily resolved by reception.
Apart from the camping fee you get slapped with park fees for each night that you stay - irrespective if you're planning to leave the campsite to visit the dunes. We were not aware of this so the average nightly rate added up a little.
The pool was nice and clean and at times overcrowded with a few backpackers. But all good and civil and happy.
We were there at the start of October. Temperatures were fine - beware the afternoon wind that comes up each day and howls till 9pm, then settles completely almost instantaneously. If you can, take along a windbreak, very useful when making fire and sitting around. We have a 6m long windbreak which was extremely useful.
On our last day, the wind came up against all expectations at exactly 5am. It was terrific! This was more a gale - most campers had already left for the dunes by the time it really picked up - and without fail, every single tent in the campsite was flattened and often destroyed. Unbelievably ours was not - but it took a huge effort to break it down - we were lying all over the place and keeping a car door open was out of the option. It was really an amazing experience - so batten down those hathches before you go out for the daym, especially during windy season.
Altogether a worthwhile destination, and place to stay for the pilgrimage to the dunes an hour away.
