“Not for solo travelers?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2010

The Lodge is now (August 2010) called the Mountain Homestead Lodge and is managed by the same owners as the nearby Desert Homestead Lodge.
On the plus side, the lodge's setting is superb, rooms are basically spotless and comfortable for a remote lodge setting and include a very small plunge pool. Tours and guides are excellent and very individual, and management staff also takes efforts to meet guests expectations.
Food is ok, but nothing special. For dinner, there is only one main course, this however is served buffet-style, so everyone can get as much as they like.
However, two things ruined the experience to some extent: First, they operate a diesel generator to run their water pump. This diesel generator started running in the first night at 2:30 am, creating an incredible and very uncomfortable noise in the otherwise absolute tranquil environment, making any sleeping very hard. Management responded to my hint and found this to be a technical fault, they then changed it to the "intended time" of 5:00 am for my second night - still quite early, even when days in the Namib desert tend to start very early too. A solar powered water pump would improve the situation greatly.
Then, restaurant staff seemed to have huge difficulties in dealing with solo travelers. Again on the first evening, they simply chose to ignore me as a solo traveler. After some time, they seated me at a distant side table, so any communication with other travelers was impossible. Also starters were only served after quite massive pleas (in the end by their chef), and they didn't manage to serve me any drinks for the whole dinner - I probably could have been a little more demanding, but after 4 or 5 retries I chose to not flurry myself more.
On the second night, the learning curve obviously had improved and service was much better, still the side table seating remained.
Said that, I wouldn't recommend this place to solo travelers or travelers who like meeting other travelers, while couples / groups can have a great time enjoying lots of privacy and solitude. I observed service for couples / groups to be prompt throughout the time.

“A great camp”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2008

This was one of 5 'camps' we stayed at whilst on a 3 week trip to Namibia and South Africa. It was the best .It has a stunning location with the lounge deck overlooking a plain with hills in the background. It's about 40 minutes drive to the Dunes which are tremendous particularly at sunrise. The accomodation is great with floor to ceiling windows with the view of the plain. The staff are very good and are very attentive to your wishes. We had arranged a balloon trip one morning but it was cancelled due to wind and cloud after we had left the camp. Our guide then arranged for us to come back to the camp for a special breakfast. They arranged a sundowner walk nearby where they had set up drinks and snacks earlier. There is only limited game in the area but they make the most of it.Food is excellent and comes probably too frequently such tea and cakes before the afternoon drives ! In short a great place to stay and enjoy both camp and the area.Very well managed with all staff very professional.

“Great hospitality + day activities”

Don't come here for the food - its not their specialty. The guided walks through Naukluft and the dunes are exceptional (especially with Angula our guide) and the staff hospitality is among the most genuine and warm I've experienced. Our view of the green desert from hut #1 was stunning.

“Panoramic views from the honeymoon suite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2008

The staff were very warm and friendly and the setting is really spectacular. The food unfortunately was below our expectations and when we were there it had been raining so moths getting in the room at night was an issue. Also huge kamikaze grasshoppers would fly at you and cling to your clothes. The dunes were amazing though.

“Fabulous”

Stayed at this camp for 3 nights. It's in the spectacular setting of Sossusvlei Desert region. There were 9 bungalows, each with a good sized deck area and a small plunge pool. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. Sitting out on the deck to view the sunrise and sunsets was truly special. It's one of the most serene places I have been and visiting some of the tallest dunes in the world was amazing. The camp staff and guides were just terrific and the main lodge area was lovely with a roomy lounge area and dining area and also a very large balcony to gaze upon the surrounding desert area. They also have a good telescope in which to view the night stars and never have I seen such stars, not even in the remote areas of the South Pacific or in the southern most regions of South America.

Some of the highlights were seeing the sunrise right at the dunes and an early morning Hot Air Balloon ride.

No complaints about the food which was plentiful and quite tasty overall. Would definitely stay at this accommodation again if returning to this part of the world.
