“Best hotel in the park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

This is the best option for staying in the park (it is the only hotel). Camping is an option, but I can definitely recommend this hotel. In the states, it would be a "1" or "2" rated hotel, but in Ghana --- definitely better than I expected.

I had no issues while I was here, so I do not understand the less than satisfactory ratings, but here goes:

THE TRIP TO MOLE: 150km from Tamale; about half on a bumpy dirt/sand road; total travel time 3-4 hours; not as bad as people make it out to be. I took the bus back from Mole to Tamale...no issues at all.

ARRIVING AT MOLE: Entrance fee was a little pricey; but then it is the best park in Ghana, and in the end, definitely worth it.

RESTAURANT: Two food options; the restaurant run by the hotel, or the cantina run for the locals. The restaurant food was very good; the food at the cantina was half the price, but still good. Plan for 10-15 cedi per meal at the restaurant and 5 cedi per meal at the cantina. Sodas and beers available at both locations. There is also a small snack store / gift store at the park headquarters where you can buy packaged food items (for instance cookies). No issues with food quality or hygiene.

RESERVING FOOD: The system here is to reserve your food three hours before lunch and three hours before dinner. No exceptions (though you can get some food the night you arrive if you ask around and are not picky). Since I had a private room, the breakfast was included in the room rental. Again, food quality was good; service was good. While I was here, I ate spaghetti, beans & rice, guinea fowl, chicken, salad,.....everything was good.

SWIMMING POOL: Clean; excellent

WILDLIFE AT THE HOTEL: Babboons raid the camp from 11am to 2pm everyday and take anything not nailed down. While I was there, the babboons stole someone's backpack with passport, someone's shoes (while they were in the pool), and lots of food items, including my lunch. The staff was very accomodating and chased down the babboons and retrieved the backpack and the stolen shoes. There are also warthogs on the hotel grounds, but they are less of a problem.

ROOM RESERVATIONS: There are two types of rooms --- private (some with AC; some with fans; some with neither), and shared rooms. You can reserve the private rooms, but the shared rooms are first-come, first-serve. A three-person private room with fan was 57 cedi per night; the shared rooms were 5 cedi per night. It is my understanding that no one is ever turned away; more mattresses are just added to the shared room. The shared room that I inspected had 4 bunk beds (sleeping 8 people). Understand, that the bus often arrives at midnight and leaves promptly at 4am. There is alot of foot traffic in-and-out of the shared rooms throughout the night (I was next door to the "female" dorm....which brings me to another point....men and women are separated in the shared rooms...but again, alot of foot traffic).

Their email address is motel.mole@yahoo.com; very prompt about responding to room reservations.

BLANKETS: I was there in December 2011. It can be chilly in the early morning. BRING A BLANKET!!!!! They do not provide blankets (I used my sleeping bag)

SHOWER: As others have mentioned; buckets of water are left for you to take a shower. After the morning hike, I would take a shower next to the pool, and then swim a couple of laps. In the evening, I would use my bucket of water for a quick rinse. Some rooms closer to the water tower had running water; you may want to ask to be near the water tower.

INSECTS: Yes, but not as big a problem as some mentioned. I never saw a scorpion, but another guest did (see comment below)

LAUNDRY SERVICE: Yes...1 cedi per item. I used them for my socks as my white socks were red from the fine dust that is everywhere. Good service, but one guest commented that they also got a scorpion with their laundry.

ROOM SERVICE: Daily room service (clean room; sheets; refill water buckets)

PAYING AT THE END: They say that foreign currency is accepted and that credit cards are accepted. THEY ARE NOT!!!!! Have plenty of cedi with you!!!! You will pay for your room, laundry, food, hikes, jeep safaris, canoe trips, trips to town, trips to other villages (they also like to be tipped)....etc...

see separate review of park for hiking, etc.....

Room Tip: near the water tower so you can have a shower nightly

“Best view in town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

OK, so it's also the only view in town, but what a view. With the correct expectations (it is in back-woods Ghana, after all) this is a very nice place. Clean, polite staff, INCREDIBLE walking safari options. Only drawback is the food. But if you pick-and-choose wisely, you can find some good items on the menu. Also be prepared for a long bumpy ride to the park, but again, it's worth it for the one-of-a-kind location.

“The "death road"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

I visited Mole NP as part of a country wide trip in October 2011. My brother and I were on a custom tour, the primary aim being bird watching. I spent many years as a Game Ranger in southern Africa, so I was not all that interested in the mammals. I specifically asked to avoid Elephant by all means possible - I have a healthy dislike for the damn things.

First thing to note : you are going to travel for 90km (at least 3.5 hours over a very bumpy dirt road - known to the locals as the "death road".

From what we could gather, we had the best of the rooms with fans and aircon. The rooms were clean enough and the beds served their purpose. Showers have been disabled and replaced by buckets of water for showering. Decent size swimming pool keeps one cool during the heat of the afternoon.

If you are coming in the wet season - you are going to get very heavily bitten by Horse Flies. It is not pleasant and there is nothing you can do about it. They bite through clothing, even double shirts. Insect spray is of no use. So don't volunteer to sit on the roof of the 4x4. Game viewing is rubbish in the wet season anyway. During the dry season this is not a problem and as a bonus the game viewing is excellent.

Baboons are a pest. Do not feed the things, it may seem cute and fun, but they only end up getting killed after a while. The Rangers have to eliminate persistent problem animals thanks to no-one other than you, the tourist.

Staff are friendly and efficient if you can be bothered to smile and be friendly to them. The customer may be important in America and whining and moaning may help there - it doesn't work in Africa. Remember where you are, 30km from the nearest habitable town - why would the staff be concerned about you. This is Africa, and it works on "African Time."

Make what you like of the whining and moaning reviews - do note with interest, that all the poorly scored reviews and experiences are as told by Americans. If you are European, ignore that tosh, you'll love Ghana and Mole NP.

For the people complaining about not seeing any animals - it's really simple, don't visit during the wet season.

Room Tip: Unfortunately we did not book rooms and hence can offer no comment on this aspect.

“Don't understand why previous tourists are complaining!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

I just came back from a round trip around Ghana which included Mole Park. After reading all the terrifying accounts on trip advisor and then experiencing the park and hotel myself, I can only conclude that tourists from very highly developed countries really expect places which are less developed like Ghana to provide them the same services offered in their countries which is unreasonable and insane!

There is a phone number for the hotel( 0244316777 ask for Emmanuel), so you are able to call them and book a room in advance(I did it the day before after ringing a number from the internet which was wrong but was given the correct one by the person). They gave the exact room that I asked for, for the correct price(family room). The rooms were probably furnished in the 80s and was never upgraded but it was clean and cozy with a working fridge, working television(which you don't need because you're there to see animals so stop complaining!),desks, chairs and a nice bathroom.

Unfortunately, they didn't have water but there were 2 buckets of water provided. When we run out, we got more buckets straight away which I thought was great! There are notes in the reception regarding food, that it is preferred you order food in advance for every meal. There are also notes about water/electricity and everything else that might not work, so if you didn't bother to read that, then don't complain.I saw the other rooms too and they looked fine to me albeit with old furniture.

The food was prepared for us at the stipulated time and it was good. There were guys there hanging about, sometime bothering the European girls but its what you also get in Accra/Delhi/Thailand.Also, the girls were jumping up and down in the swimming pool wt their sexy bikinis in the middle of the jungle, where there are a lot of men who probably have no idea what European culture is so I'm not surprised if they disturb the girls. If you are European and you are traveling in the middle of the jungle in Africa where there is nothing, I advice you don't jump up and down in a tiny bikini. You're asking for it and don't expect people understand your way of life. Btw, someone complained abt the pool but when I was there, there were at least 15-20 European tourist really making use of the pool so it was clean. All the staff were wearing Mole Park green t-shirt and were very friendly to us,smiled at us, helped us, played with our 4 year old son.

There is a viewpoint at the hotel which is directly looking at the 2 waterholes and sitting at that area was just breathtaking.I really felt peaceful and one with nature and you can see a lot of animals just grazing at the flat lands. The price of the rooms are reasonable and for that view, I think its even cheap.

Most of all, if you go to Mole, you are going to see wild animals, not the motel and the staff. We got a jungle guide and took a car safari into the park for 2 days and it was AMAZING! And CHEAP! We saw so many animals and birds and the guide Adam, who walked around with us with a huge gun was absolutely one of a kind.He knew every single animal which was in the park and even their Latin names! He wrote down in detail all the animals we saw in a piece of paper and gave it to us for remembrance. When we had problems of running low on gas, he helped us to get some too bless him. Please do look for Adam,he is a cool guy!

We really wanted to see elephants which we were unlucky to come across at first but right before we left, there was one at the main waterhole(where later everyone from the hotel saw as well from the viewpoint).Adam came running to us and just took us down the walking path at a slope next to the hotel and wow! we saw a huge elephant.Nothing really beats that feeling of seeing such a magnificent creature in the wild only 5-10 meters away.Do try it.We also saw groups of baboons, warthogs and even a spotted bok right next to our cabin and lots, lots of them, probably around 30 different species.

I've decided Mole is my absolute favorite place in Ghana and hope the park will be maintained.I want to go there again and wanted to stay in the hotel for one more night. So its worth the trip there, worth to see the animals and don't think about the minor things like how old the hotel rooms look or the lack of amenities sometime. We should be lucky that there is a motel there which does provide all the basics so people like us from the more developed countries can experience a real jungle!

Room Tip: Get rooms next to the pool/restaurant area.

“Survivable, but unpleasant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

You will enjoy the park in spite of, and not because of, the Motel. You can't book a room more than a day in advance and can only book one night at a time. This means you might get stranded and have to sleep in Larabanga if you try to stay for more than one night. (There are many reports of assaults on tourists in Larabanga.) You can't book a dorm in advance. If you manage to get someone on the phone before you leave for Mole and ask whether a dorm bed will be available, you cannot trust what they tell you. There is absolutely no place to lock your belongings in the dorms, so you must keep your valuables with you at all times. Should you be interested in a private room and manage to make a reservation, they'll probably screw your reservation up. It's usually possible to camp, but between the baboons and the strange men in the park this might not be a good idea.

The few food items that are actually available will be badly cooked and probably not match the description in the menu. Any special requests -- vegan, spicy, etc. -- will be written down but ignored.

What bothered me most during my stay was that a man who did not work for the hotel came by trying to sell shea butter, offer his moto-taxi services, etc. The hotel staff told him my name so that he could approach me as if he were an employee! There are signs in every room warning visitors about local conmen, but these conmen have accomplices among the hotel staff. (Those who actually do work at the Motel have no uniform, nametag or other identification, and there are many employees. So it's nearly impossible to tell who works there and who doesn't -- a huge safety problem!)

Also, the only bus that goes to the park arrives very late at night and leaves very early in the morning, so they're essentially screwing you into paying for two nights if you want to see anything at all. You can take the Wa bus on the way to the park and get off at Larabanga, but it's not nearly as easy to leave the park this way. When you take the bus out of the park, it's a hotel employee's job to call the bus driver at 3:00 am and wake him up. The driver will go back to sleep and the hotel employee, instead of calling this man again when he doesn't show, will lie to hotel guests about some mechanical problems with the bus. You'll wait for over an hour before finally carrying all your things in the dark to the bus stop near the rangers' canteen. A most unpleasant end to a mediocre stay.
