I have read some unflattering reviews of this hotel but c'mon, it's a Hyatt, so I had to check it out for myself. My first impression was "Where is Everybody?" as there seemed to be more empty rooms than full ones. I get it - - Long Island is not exactly the Caribbean or a ski resort so not "the place" to be in late December. But at the rate I got in November, enhanced by the discounted standby upgrade to a suite (a unique Hyatt win/win idea and yes, we got it), how could I stay home? So we went.
The good:
Breakfast buffet about the best I've ever had. Ours was free on AAA but the $19 I paid for my son's was damn near worth the full price. Everything breakfast could be and should be. Scrambled eggs from heaven (how do they do that?), home fries from scratch with onions and sweet peppers, they know how to cook bacon and sausage properly (well cooked) and the butter for my toast was thoughtfully softened. I almost forgot the most important part - - coffee was excellent, full flavored (clearly NOT drinkin' Dunkin). Service? Attentive & personal. We also appreciated the gift shop because they keep long hours and stock Coke: the woman I married would die of thirst before drinking the Hyatt corporate choice, Pepsi.
The not as good, for balance:
The only fault my wife could find with the room was that the rug was a little stained in places. But she agreed that the vacuum job was spotless. My only complaint was that the business center was out of order. I know, most of you carry lap tops and could care less. But I am trying to reduce my impact on the planet so I prefer shared resources. Plus you never know who you'll meet in an internet cafe - - or a business center - - if it is open.
If you are still reading, you are very patient. Congrats. Your reward is my theory as to why this Hyatt isn't more popular. They don't like to talk about it (can't blame them) but they are a little closer to a local (now closed) landfill than is desireable. It is just west of the hotel a half mile or so. I drove by it on the way so when I spotted a corner of it just in view from my room I knew what it was and I surmised that they do their best to keep guests away from the west end of the hotel. Honestly, it had little or no effect on my enjoyment of this grand resort-style hotel but I can imagine this might have an effect on others, especially if their rooms are on the western end.
Bottom line - - There is no rational reason why this hotel should not be bustling again. I'd return for sure if I was ever in the area and needed a comfortable full service experience. I don't care if others foolishly stay away - - quite is nice too.
