My wife and I stayed in the front room for one night at the Captain’s Cottage, booked in our friends' name, and our friends stayed in the other room (at a higher rate because it was larger). We chose it because it was the only place at Lake Keuka that did not require a two-night booking. The stairs to the second floor are narrow and steep. When we entered our room, we noticed an Italian food smell, and we found that the food and drink had not been cleaned out of the refrigerator. It was a very good refrigerator with a freezer compartment. The lady who ran the Chocolatier of Hammondsport, on the ground floor, gave us the keys to the room and keys to the house on the same key ring. We walked around Hammondsport until dinner time when we came back to clean up. We found that our friends were being helped by passers-by because they could not enter the house to get back in to their rooms, and the lady had left. Phone calls to all of the numbers for Captain’s Cottage connected with recordings, and many messages were left, but none was returned. Our friends had medicine in their bags that had to be taken by evening, and we all had been locked out and unable to contact anyone. I started asking at the bars and at Browsers, a gift shop with a wonderful selection, and they told me the chief of police might be able to contact the owner of Captain’s Cottage. By chance, I met the police chief at the town square, and he tried to contact the lady through various townspeople. He went back with me to try the keys and found that they did not work. I left my cell phone number with him, and while I was eating dinner, he called to say he contacted the husband of the lady, and we would all meet at the Captain’s Cottage. The husband arrived and found that the wrong keys had been put on the ring, and he gave me new keys. We had a piece of chocolate, which was delicious. The next morning, we waited until 10 a.m. for the lady manager to arrive so we could find out the costs of the rooms to share them. We had been given no receipt or breakdown of costs. She had not arrived by 10 a.m., so we left and phoned after check-out time at 12 noon. The lady answered the phone and asked if we were upstairs. We said we had left, and we wanted to find out the final costs, and she said she had charged our credit card. We said we meant we needed to know the cost breakdown so we could share costs. She gave the breakdown to us, and she never mentioned the strange circumstances the night before. Maybe she was avoiding an awkward situation, or maybe she was unaware. At any rate, I would advise travelers to be prepared for a novel experience if they stay there. But the chocolate was out of this world.
