My husband and I decided to go the North Fork to check out the wineries and beaches. We have never been there before even though we both lived on LI for many years. We decided at the last minute so many of the B&Bs and more popular places were booked. We found the Sunset Motel and decided to take a chance. I was a bit nervous but my husband said he had a good feeling about the place! He was right and I'm so glad we stayed there and not in one of the fancy B&Bs that I was looking at. The location can't be beat very central to both Greenport and Southold as well as to beaches and wineries. The hotel has an absolutely beautiful view of the LI Sound and there is no better place to watch the sunset than from the motel lawn, beach or even sitting on your room porch. The hotel could certainly use some updating but it is very obvious that the new owners are doing just that. The room was very clean and simply furnished but clearly had been newly painted and the bathroom looked to be newly updated as well. There is a nice large screened in porch with comfortable chairs and a table and all the rooms have a beautiful view of the water. My only complaints, the bed was really uncomfortable, lumpy pillows, the A/C was very loud and we had to unplug the refrigerator at night because it made so much noise and the outside light lit up the room so it was like having a night light on all night. However, none of these things would keep me from going back. The private access to the beach, the friendliness of the owner, the price and location are well worth it and I think that over time things will continue to improve. I would not hesitate to recommend. We had a great time on our trip and really enjoyed staying at this motel and look forward to a return visit.

Sunset Motel is in the perfect location...right on the water, close to the town, and right on the wine trail. We stayed here after friends reccommended it. We've previously stayed right in the town of Greenport to be close to restaurants, etc., but decided to stay here for a change. Don't expect the Mandarin, but do expect to be made to feel at home in a clean, secure and friendly motel. We didn't spend much time in the room, we hit the wineries during the day and were out for dinner at night. I did enjoy waking up to the water view and enjoying my coffee outside where it was blissfully quiet. This place checked all the right boxes for us: location, cleanliness, price, service and again...location! Loved it and can't wait to go back.

As reported in other reviews, this is an older roadside motel with limited services. We have stayed here twice when visiting family in the area. We've noticed that the management has been investing in basic updates, including paint, carpet, and accessories, which is nice to see. On the other hand, some of the appliances appear to date from the '70s and are marginally functional. The sofabed in the living room of our suite was very uncomfortable to sleep on.

The location is lovely, with a huge lawn overlooking Long Island Sound. Sunsets from our screened porch were first-rate. The buildings are a bit closer to the road than I'd like. The beach is lovely, but rocky. Housekeeping was solid. Front desk staff was professional and friendly.

You need to know, this is what it is. An older roadside inn outside of the center of Greenport. You will get a clean room and shower and bedding with absolutely no charm and no ambiance. There are no services (it's a motel, you drive up and go to your room). If this is what you are looking for, great. We needed a less expensive room for one night and this is what we got. Nothing more, nothing less.
