We reserved a formal dress New Years Eve party with a room for $695 plus tax. We made the reservation on December 29, 2011 and were told there were no cancelations, which we accepted without issue, but Garden City Hotel does not trust its guests. The hotel reservation demanded we fax both sides of my credit card to hold the room along with a signed agreement acknowledging the no cancelation policy as the expect their guests to not show and fright the hotel charge with American Express. We leave 20 minutes away and planed to get to the hotel at 3:00 relax, go to the gym late afternoon 5-6PM workout and take a swim before getting ready for the 8:30 party. When we arrived at the hotel the check-in clerk wanted to put plastic wrist bands, similar to the bands worn at Club Meds in the 80’s, on us. Other than the tackiness of requiring ladies and gentlemen to accessorizing their evening gowns and suits with plastic non detachable bracelets, they demanded the bracelets to be attached, now, 5 hours before the ball. This may be appropriate for free beer at a spring break event, but not for a ballroom New Years Eve gala comprising of a more mature clientele. Four Seasons, Ritz and other high end hotels try to memorize faces and names even at parties, and do not subject their guest to plastic wrist irons. When we said we did not want to wear the bands now, the clerk actually said “He MUST put the band on us now.” He repeated, we are not attach them ourselves, but he must attach it to both my wife and me and the ticket for the event will still need to be presented. Only after my annoyance grew to anger, and a manager came over were we allowed to proceed to our room. We did not put on the plastic ball and shackle. The bellhop told us he never understood this bracelet policy. At 5:30PM I went to the gym where I planned on working out for an hour then go for a swim. We were told when we made the reservation that the pool and gym was open till 10PM. When arriving at the gym the attendant said in difficult to understand English that the pool was closing at 6PM (pointing to the “6” on the clock helped in the translation). They party was fine and we did wear our bracelets. In the morning, New Years Day, we went to breakfast at 10:15AM. We returned to our room at 11:10AM. The Garden City Hotel de-activated our room keys. The hotel declares now check out time is 11AM, regardless reservations and in-room guest book states 12 noon. So it was 11:10AM and the hotel locked us out of our room. Did we check out; no. Did housekeeping leave a notice for us; no. Did the hotel call the room and leave a message on the phone; no. Did the hotel do anything to make sure their guests were safe and satisfied before locking them out of their room at 11:00AM (an hour before check out time) on New Year’s Day while their guests are eating breakfast in the hotel; no.
The hotel had security come and open our door as if we did something wrong. They did not reprogram our room key only let us into our room.
If we were only asked to put on the bracelets at the door of the party, it would have been a small negative but a non-issue and I would not have written this review.
The room had a 2 ‘’ circle burn stain in the wall; otherwise the room was comfortable, but no 5 star.
